Moonspeak/moonrunes is a generic term for any Asian language, although I've only ever seen it applied to Japanese.

Yeah, pretty much. I've definitely seen it applied to others, but not nearly as much. That mostly has to do with it mostly originating around discussion of video games, though (and those... basically didn't exist outside japanese when the term was germinating), as near as I can recall, and japanese remaining probably the most encountered eastern language among english prime speaking groups. If it's still being used in another decade or three as korean and chinese stuff propagates more, you'll probably see it used on them, too. If for no other reason than the fact that a lot of folks that use the term can't really tell one written language from the other, heh. Dunno whether moon runes or moonspeak came first, though. I'd wager it was the former, but that's probably because I first ran into the usage in relation to game fan translation stuff, which is significantly more text based than anime et al based stuff is.

Neat thing, I'm fairly sure some of the common romhacking/translation tools derive(d) their name from the term.

But. . .why 'moon'? I'm always thinking of our moon up high there and how it even connected that way--then my imagination goes on a ride into our-part-of-the-world-lore and mythology.
