Oh good, NPR mentioned the other story that made the news. And hey, remember how British journalists got reported to the police by Facebook when they tried to talk to Facebook staff about shutting down the pedophiles using Facebook to trade cp? Remember how Facebook doesn't give a damn if people are broadcasting illegal content and activities on their service?

People are sick, people love to display their sickness to others, and Facebook's moral compass only ever points to $.

It's the second incident in the past three months where an apparent violent crime in Chicago, with multiple assailants, was broadcast live on Facebook as it happened.

Oh for god's sake.

Spoiler: Tried to eat a jalapeno today (click to show/hide)

First small bite starting from the bottom(opposite the stem), nothing. Second bite, nothing, starting to wonder if I misidentified the jalapeno. Third bite, now about 1/3 of the way up the pepper, hit seeds and got a little spicy. Fourth bite, almost halfway, it's getting hot, maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Fifth bite, ohcrapohcrapohcrap, it's really hot, my eyes are watering, nose is running, and I suddenly start hiccuping rapidly. It takes most of the rest of my break, including most of my lemonade drink and a cereal bar to stop the burning.

Would do that again.

I ate a straight habanero once last year. lasted a full 4 and a half minutes before going for the milk too. My body was not happy with me.

I like to eat jalapenos but my body draws the line at bell peppers. fuck those things theyre spicy

Once went to an Indian place that thought it was okay to substitute jalapeņos for their fried banana peppers since the market was out of the latter. I ate two whole ones before I noticed. Not even the heat that got me-I regularly go to a Thai place that goes far beyond that level of spice-just the sheer surprise of getting the main load from what was supposed to be a mild prep before my curry.

My condolences to the suckers who eat reapers whole and raw.

Outside having a pre-existing heart condition that gets aggravated (which is TYPICALLY what wavers are for if you have to sign one) due to you panicking from the pain. Though the sheer panic has been known to hurt even healthy people.

... if you're talking non-peppercorn peppers as a spice, then sure? Capsaicin can cause a number of problems if you get too much in you, or too much on the wrong place. Vomiting, diarrhea, fairly extreme irritation, etc. Conceptually it can kill you if you ingest too much, but apparently the effect is such you'd have an incredibly difficult time doing that while dealing with the less intense overdose effects, particularly with stuff like actual peppers instead of concentrated junk. Quick check shows capsaicin exposure's one of the most common plant based reasons people call poison centers, heh.

And ninja'd a bit, but sure. Capsaicin more or less is a poison, really. We just happen to season food with it.

E: Pretty sure there's some other spices I'm forgetting that are outright lethal if used more than sparingly, never mind the stuff that just drastically increases the chance of cancer or somethin'. Humans'll eat just about anything that doesn't kill them particularly quickly, some days.

Hmm... The LD50 is only 43 mg/kg in mice, though it's unclear how well that scales to humans.

Further study is needed.
