I would ask you to cite your sources, but I imagine that that would be a lesson in futility.

Ohh man, it is soo important that I have these sources. I mean everything I said hinges on it.

As for the counter to Draignean let me get a proper definition

Things a sportsman does does not necessarily constitute good sportsmanship, to put it simply.

So is nobody else confused that Neo claimed that 'Please' was falling to the wayside, or was it just me

Funny enough... looking this up to link an article got me two results back to back

One by a psychologist who Is basically saying: "STOP saying please and thank you so dang much!"

Another by someone with no qualifications saying: "ALWAYS SAY IT!!! ALWAYS!!!"

Kind of interesting.

I would ask you to cite your sources, but I imagine that that would be a lesson in futility.

He's citing this: which is a pretty interesting article.

You can't apply a fantasy version of sports onto real sports.

That would be ridiculous. Imagine if someone had a version of a sport in their mind that doesn't actually exist, something purely found in the realm of ideas. A kind of 'ideal', if you will. And imagine they told people to try and act like these imaginary people and hold themselves to a standard that isn't necessarily expedient to apply in the real world for a number of reasons!

I can't tell if you are trying to be ironic towards me or not.

My whole point is that just because it is a convention it doesn't mean it is good.

I don't know why this one point is so hotly contested... THEN AGAIN!!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_control

Ahh yes... makes sense now.

Carry on!

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sportsmanship

Quote from: Merriam-Webster dictionary
conduct (as fairness, respect for one's opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport

And... What is Fair, what is respectful, and what is gracious depends on the sport and people's expectations towards it.

Hence the "In a sport" or "a sport" as in... a sport... as in not sports. Singular... Not plural.

What exactly are you trying to argue, again? You've completely lost me here.

What exactly are you trying to argue, again? You've completely lost me here.

That just because something is manners it doesn't mean it isn't fake.

That is actually it.

But people contested that point by saying that because something is a convention it means it isn't fake because conventions are good and because it is a convention it is "just something you do" devoid of all meaning and context.

So I had to go on a tangent to prove that just because something is a convention it doesn't mean it is necessarily good.

And it gone on by this...

ALL THIS! just so people can sleep well at night thinking that everytime someone says GG they actually mean it or that somehow by being manners that there is absolutely no meaning in "Good Game".

All while I tried to get people to ignore me by saying that I am the only one on earth bothered by fake politeness... because I am.

At this point he's claiming that we're exercising Social Control because his ideas are threatening our worldview, and thus we're persecuting him out of hand in order to avoid engaging a threat to our perception of reality rather than accept him and consider his opinion honestly.

But people contested that point by saying that because something is a convention it means it isn't fake because conventions are good.

No one said that.

So I had to go on a tangent to prove that just because something is a convention it doesn't mean it is necessarily good.

Is that what you did?

ALL THIS! just so people can sleep well at night thinking that everytime someone says GG they actually mean it.

Actually I'm here because your argument is far too absolutist.

If someone says something, they do not mean... That it is fake. Disgenuine.

Sure, one could argue that the words are meaningless but the intent is what is true.

But since when is double speak a sign of honesty? That having an alternate motive or intention somehow transforms something into honesty.

Yes... so absolute...

If someone says something, they do not mean... That it is fake.

And is that necessarily a bad thing?

No.

It just bothers me.

Though I do laugh that we just finished the conversation in like... 4 posts and really... only 4 actual lines.

Ohh man, it is soo important that I have these sources. I mean everything I said hinges on it.
Sources are particularly important in any context. Otherwise I can just walk in here and say "specialists say good sportsmanship cures cancer". Yes, it is an absurd example, but you'd be surprised at how often it is used. For instance, you claim that sportsmanship is bad. Yet you do not prove it. You do not provide a basis for your statement.

Wikipedia is unfortunately not a trustworthy source due to it being editable by anyone for any reason. (It is, however, a good source of sources, checking a page's bottom is a really good idea.)

RE: Please discussion. People need to remember that there is more than one culture in the planet. Just because the (I assume, mea culpa if wrongly assumed) north american culture uses, according to the discussion so far, please in a coercive manner, doesn't mean that applies to everywhere. Refusing a request, please or not, is, in and of itself, not rude. Telling them to fuck off is.

What exactly are you trying to argue, again? You've completely lost me here.

Fake politeness is sometimes the only thing preventing two people that hate each other from coming to blows.

Manners is about as fake as you mean it to be. I only say "GG" in games when it's actually been a good game. I don't mind losing, but I do mind games where half the players act like spoiled toddlers (and thus don't say GG). But my point is: just because something is not sincere, doesn't mean it is bad. Just because I say good day/afternoon/night to people I meet even if I am having a really bad day, does not make me pure undiluted evil. Because not deliberately offending random people, even if you need to lie about it, is what allow society to function.

You, Neo, seem to be operating from a viewpoint that Honest = Good. It is not. Sometimes honesty can cause a person to kill themselves, sometimes a lie is what lets them keep going.

Fakeedit: And of course the discussion seems to end as I click post. Disregard or not at your own discretion.

But it wasn't important, it was just such a spurious fact that didn't mean anything!

It didn't even help or hinder my argument it was just interesting!
