The AI wired home has been a thing for decades. It never took off because the idea is fundamentally useless.

It's basically a solution in search of a problem.

Like itisnotlogical hints, the overheads in managing such a system are more complex than just doing the things yourself. e.g. you could robotize your coffee maker to make nice hot coffee when you want, but say you "automate" the coffee maker to make a fresh pot of coffee when you get up. You still need to refill the coffee beans each night, and you will wind up not having coffee some times you do want it (because you forgot) and having coffee some times you don't want it (e.g. you were in a hurry that morning or slept in). Then you are going to have to deal with excess amounts of cold stale coffee to throw out. Exactly how is this saving effort?

I mean, an actual robot that does all the support tasks for applicance might save effort. But putting robot controls on your applicances isn't going to do that. It's like Steins;Gate where they modify a microwave so that you can SMS a number of seconds to it, and it runs that much. The joke is that you still have to put the food in and take it out manually, so the invention is basically useless.

I originally thought of the idea because I wanted to be able to send a text to some receiving device at home, so that coffee would already be there when I got home from school or work. Or in a voice operated system I can just say "Make two cups" on the way into the shower, and save a few minutes on my morning routine. I don't think there's a single thing I'd set to "repeat every day without any logic or control."

One of the "if I had infinite money and was a programming wizard" ideas I had was that the AI would know about my phone GPS, probably through some custom app that literally phones home every half hour or w/e. So, the computer would know for a fact when I'm not home, and thus that it's okay to do a time-consuming virus scan or update on the home computer.

I've just realized that I have no real sense of which language things are in, as long as I can understand it. Whether I'm just reading subtitles or listening to something in french or hearing it in my native english, it all seems about the same to me.

I can't imagine why anyone would mash a potato when you could cut them up into vaguely cuboid shapes, and fry them in a pan.   I have no idea what those are called but they are heavenly.

That said I guess mashed potatoes are acceptable when you lack a knife to cut them up with.
