I guess in one sense, only several thousand dollars winding up in the wrong place over the last year or two is a surprisingly tame results :V

Put simply, a passcard system *must* be networked, otherwise you'll have to go program every individual door whenever you need a new card. This is not only inconvienient, but having the doors be directly programmable is a massive security flaw.

Well, it's better than switching back to physical keys.

But worse than just having a physical key, too, though. Or at least some kind of emergency unlock that doesn't consist of breaking down the door and/or going out a window. Cost permitting, the answer to these sorts of situations tends to be most effective when you stop asking which and start realizing both is good.

Dunno about magnetic strips, but the new credit card RFID chips can be. That said, not all chipped cards are RFID cards capable of wireless communication (those are a fraction of a percent of the total market). And if you're really paranoid you can get a cheap little paper sleeve interwoven with enough shit to block wireless signals for basically nothing, fits right into your wallet like the card would normally. The wallets and stuff are a total scam preying on ignorance.

Not personally involved with that sort of stuff, but I've read through archives and whatnot in desperation for something to read enough to know that... yes. Forum game style stuff that has a couple posts by the OP who then wanders off for whatever reason does indeed seem pretty common. Probably a majority of the distinct threads, even.

No clue if there's a common standard for thread creator contact, though. Reasonableness would say to give it a week or so and then maybe float 'em a PM to see if they died, but considering how fast some of those things run, I'unno.

Forum games have a pretty high infant mortality rate, yeah. Games that manage to get going tend to die less, but sometimes the GM just gets fed up and quits, or stops updating for whatever reason. Sometimes you see revivals, more often for Suggestion games than games with players, because it's a chore to gather all the old players who have inevitably wandered off.
