http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/290287/How_Sam_Barlows_new_employer_is_trying_to_make_films_interactive.php

There are some people talking about merging games and movies, actually making in-the-cinema style movies interactive. It seems doomed to me. There was a thing called Smell-o-Rama once, where capsules near your chair assaulted your nostrils with different scents based on the movie. It didn't last. I can see a film in the cinema that reacts to the audience in some way ending up the same way.

A 'choose your own adventure' type movie might be cool, but then again, I can see people getting frustrated over it. It'd be more of a single person or maybe small group type experience.

Edit: There actually are some rides which have stuff like vibrations or air puffing at you, but it's limited to tactile and environmental experiences and it's limited to rides AFAIK.

They actually did choice-movies back in like the 1950s. Branching movies where the audience votes. But the costs involved are prohibitive (if you really allow choice) or it's a fake-choice, and thus it doesn't work twice.

With "fake-choice" the movie branches then rejoins, repeatedly. With that, any number of choice points never needs more than twice the run-time of footage. So if the experience goes for 2 hours and there are 20 choices, you get 1 choice every 6 minutes, and need to make< 4 hours of footage, and you get 2^20 possible movies. But you could adapt that by saying that the final 1-2 choice points are open-ended, so you could e.g. say honestly there are 1 million different possible movies and 4 possible endings, and still around only 4 hours of footage you need to film. Basically this would be like a visual novel in structure, but shot as a live action film.

But if you actually branch, then the costs involved would clearly be astronomical compared to the benefits. If the branches occur every X minutes, then your amount of needed footage doubles for each consecutive X minute block. If there are N blocks, then you need to make X * (2N - 1) minutes of footage. e.g. for the two hour movie with a choice every 6 minutes (well 19 choices since the first 6 minutes has no choice), the amount of footage needed for true free-will would be 6291450 minutes. Basically 12 years of original footage. But you'd truly have 500,000 possible endings! In fact, half your footage (6 years worth of film) would be just the various endings.

Question in mythology class worksheet over symbolism:
What does your driver's liscence symbolize?
I answered:
I am legally allowed to drive.
And it was marked incorrect.
What
Why
I suspect the answer being sought is "Rite of Passage", as this is one of the universals of myth anthropology that being permitted to drive best represents in our culture.

Confidence? The Hero's Journey? Beer run?
actually your driver's licence is about ethics in games journalisim

Turns out it symbolizes 'freedom'
Apparently
Despite the fact that I do not enjoy driving and avoid it at all costs
I want to argue this with the teacher but it's not the answer she had so it's wrong
This was supposed to be an enjoyable class
Why highschool must you do this

I've never heard of the drivers license be used as an example of symbolism..... also it's a pretty arbritrary question, unless you're supposed to answer with whatever answer was in a textbook.

No textbook for this whole course we've got to figure it out ourselves
Note lack of any relation to mythology

Oh, nevermind, your teacher is just an idiot who doesn't know how to ask good questions.

Also, @egan, is the mythology class any particular mythology or just mythology in general? Just wondering out of curiosity here.

edit: Missed what you said earlier.

So you're supposed to create a creation myth explaining the nature of the class?

EDIT: misplaced text.

At least it's an elective, and Norse is pretty cool regardless.

Still, the drivers license thing is a complete curveball out of left field that doesn't seem to have anything to do with mythology, let alone Norse.

High school teacher using premade online lesson plans because she can't be arsed to write her own? Yep, that sounds like standard unimaginative bullshit. Remember, if they're teaching in junior high or high school, they're typically either there because they're passionate or because they couldn't cut it as an academic (or, in a few memorable cases, because they're pedos). Or because they got an ed degree and honestly shouldn't be teaching anyone older than primary school students but are anyways because it's difficult to find competent teachers.

We've barely gotten to the mythology bit yet
We're reviewing, in this case, symbolism
No mythology attached
Other things we review include
Imagery
Personification
Figurative language
We're high school seniors
Most of these people have no idea what i just listed off
And we have to read aloud to the class

I apologize for taking so much space I just don't get this and i need to vent a bit

Got turned down after a phone interview.

Wtf since I haven't gone off the rails, and actually was able to type up a reasonable e-mail asking for feedback.

Or it could just be I don't really want a job, and I'm alright with it. That doesn't explain the strong-ass compulsion to immediately type out an e-mail asking for feedback to improve my candidacy, though.

Sounds like a complete timewaster of a class.

Can't you complain to the principal or someone about the quality of the class and you want out? You did say it's an elective.

I remember, on my first day of drama class, the teacher literally could not control the class and yet somehow managed to get us all to sit down and just be silent for the last 30 minutes of class. No punitive activity or worksheet or anything, just sit quietly until the bell rings you little shits.

Most of the people in that class were shitheads though, and taking it because they knew the teacher couldn't control the class so they could fuck around and talk with their friends. Most students got A's and B's.

We have a week @ the beginning of semester to drop-swap electives
This can be circumvented but it's a pain in the ass
And all of the others sound worse even if they're done right
Re: art or acting classes and my poor experiences with them
And don't even get me started on the 4n language classes
Those were heaps of bullshit wtfs
