I've seen them around, mostly in the politics thread. I didn't see the content that got them banned, and haven't seen a lot... but the little I have seen looked generally decent, level-headed, avoided bad arguments, etc.

This is the 3rd ban in a few months that I don't understand or see the necessity of. I really should look into this more, and consider writing Tarn something.

If I suddenly get banned, someone do this for me?

We've just got tattle-tales about. Toady is far more likely to ban people if they get reported than if he just came across them saying something borderline.

Pretty sure Toady doesn't just auto-ban anyone that gets reported. There's obviously something in the reported posts that violates one forum guideline or another.

I was reported for a thread I made last year, and Toady only gave me a warning and disappeared the thread. And he reversed the warning after I had a polite chat with him via PM (because I hadn't posted it for the reasons he thought I had - he had gotten an impression of intent from disappeared past posts by other people which he said were similar, rather than looking at my own post history).

(Clearly someone else had the same impression to have reported it, though, which made me sad, tbf.)

My point is that I don't think Toady bans for a single offense. You have to build up a string of them, and he warns you first, so you should know you're in the danger zone.

That's been my experience as well. I've had one warning, ever, for a really heated argument. And that's with all the dumb shit I've said that probably triggered people. It's gotta be either repeated failure to listen or something really goddamn egregious for a permaban. Remember, you don't get to see all the times a person might have been PMed or warned by Toady in the past, and you probably don't remember any mutes they might have had over the years, which is a big part in creating the impression of abruptness.
