Star trek and derails are serious business.

My WTF is that someone said this:
> women aren't allowed in Starfleet as captains

I can name three off the top of my head: Erika Hernandez, Rachel Garrett, and Kathryn Janeway.

Okay, technically, I could name Janeway, and then I had to look up the other two by the names of their ships, because they weren't in their own shows (Garrett was the captain of the Enterprise C, and Hernandez the captain of the NX-02 Columbia).

Hernandez at the very least proves that whoever said that in TOS was lying, unless you want to believe things backslid culturally between Archer's day and Kirk's.

Also, I don't agree that Voyager was terrible. There were some terrible episodes, sure. It wasn't as good as DS9, sure. It wasn't as good as BSG, sure. It still wasn't terrible, though. Of course, my views on Voyager and Enterprise have mellowed with time. I used to really hate Enterprise. It's not that bad, either. There's a lot of better sci-fi shows, to be sure, but neither of those is awful.

Stargate: Universe, on the other hand... I couldn't bring myself to watch the second season. The first season was written like literally everyone was carrying the Idiot Ball, all the time. Even Rush and Young. Even SAMANTHA CARTER, in the first damn episode. Maybe someday I'll go back and give it another go. I don't know. I'm still upset that Atlantis got cancelled for that dren.

Glad to see a view on those two that's (kind of) similar to mine.
I don't get most of the hate really.

I'm watching season 3 of TOS right now. God, there are some terrible episodes in this season. Voyager is at least a lot more narratively sensible than most of TOS, which is mainly fun for nostalgia goggles.

There are some excruciatingly terribly written episodes in TOS. Season 3 "highlights" so far have been especially on the awful side so far.

-"Spock's Brain". Fucking terrible.
-"The Paradise Syndrome". Fucking terrible.
-"Is There in Truth No Beauty?". Fucking terrible.
-"And the Children Shall Lead". Fucking terrible.
-"Spectre of the Gun". Fucking terrible.

The other two episodes I saw from this season so far were ok, nothing really amazing however.

Star Trek TOS is really over-rated. I can see why this was canned after season 3. The writing so far this season has been especially awful, even compared to the weaker episodes of the previous two seasons.

You are taking it out of context which is that it was ONLY true in the TOS era within the time it was made.

Which yes it was contradicted and ignored post TOS which all those examples are from (and for good reason).

What episode was that stated in? I don't think I ever saw it. Also, there was a season 3 of TOS?

Also, there was a season 3 of TOS?

Yeah, and so far it's been pretty goddamn terrible, which is probably why the S3 episodes are less well known. Consider this synopsis for an entire episode:

Quote
Episode: Spock's brain. Captain Kirk pursues aliens who have stolen Spock's brain.
It's as retarded as it sounds.

There's also an episode where they're escorting a friendly ambassador of a race who are so unutterably ugly that any human who looks upon them instantly and incurably goes homicidally insane, and lives in a box. Cthulhu in a box basically. I wanted brain bleach for how dumb the whole thing was.

The last episode of TOS. People typically ignore it as the ravings of a mad woman...

But... well... Unfortunately it was meant to be canon.

But then again... It was also canon in Star Trek Bible, until TOS itself broke it, that children do not mourn the death of their own parents.

It's as retarded as it sounds

And yet Spock's Brain is one of the few episodes that have a follow up in "The Infinite Vulcan"

Well less follow up and more clone.

Season 3 of TOS was when NBC's attitude toward the show went from "we don't want to support this" to "what do we have to do to make this scrap die"x slashing the budget and putting it in the worst possible time slots. There are so many bad episode s in that seasons because they had trouble paying the writers, and couldn't afford to o much in the way of effects and sets.

First day working at a public library. Things I've learned:

  • There are so many Finnish and Swedish detective stories that they require their own subsection. There's only one bookshelf specifically for fantasy in the adults' section, and science fiction is just sorted with the others.
  • My town's library has a considerable catalogue of movies, TV series and video games, including some that came out recently. For some reason, it sees less use than one would imagine.
  • The alphabetic order is weird:
    • V and W are considered to be the same letter.
    • Numbers and special symbols come last, unlike in computing.
    • Ä and Ö are not the same as A and O, but Ü is the same as U.
    • Icelandic authors are sorted based on first name because the '-son' names don't count.
    • Nobody has any idea what to do with foreign letters, such as Ð (is it a D or a T?).
  • If you don't return your books on time, the librarians will learn your name and gossip about you behind your back.

Ð (lowercase ð) is a th, as in then, as opposed to th as in thick

Þ, þ is th as in thick

Yes, I know how Ð is pronounced, but where do I place it in the alphabetic order? And for that matter, where does Þ go?

edh follows d, thorn follows t or y

edit: for further clarification, thorn comes after y in icelandic

english doesn't use thorn anymore, but it historically came after t

Yes, but Mr Tea is Soumilaindish. They don't use either and if they ever did it's because routsiperki influence and not because their own sound-language saw use for them. Thus why it's a konfuusioni where to place them.

In actual wtf news: Finland's hockey team got their balls kicked by Denmark in the world championships last week. And that is hilarious.

You say this as if those two weren't the same sound :P

Also Tanya something* was a Captian on an alternate universe Enterprise in one episode.

*She was a main security officer for a while until her actor decided to quit, and so, her character got eaten by what was essentially a sapient pool of oil, then her position was taken over by Worf.

Also, wasn't Benjamin Sisko's (of DS9) wife a captian as well? She died in a battle against the Borg though.
