Saw a fly land on my coffee cup and begin venturing inside. Quickly attempted to shoo it away, but instead of flying away, it flew straight into the remaining coffee and began drowning. O.o

For something that probably aren't even sentient, houseflies are spiteful fucks. One time a fly decided to stay in my room and even though I closed all my food containers and left the window open for it to leave, it still stayed there and kept bugging me every day until it died a few weeks later from starvation.

Also, I daresay that between being "bugged" and a slow death from starvation, the fly got the worse end of the deal.

Flies are DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKS. They deserve everything they get, those bastards.
They look cute and all, but they refuse to leave you alone and take some sort of twisted pleasure in irritating people even in a room with no food for them, an easy avenue of escape and no real reason to remain in the room other than to be a TOTAL DICK.

...Although at least they aren't ants, I guess. Sorry flies you aren't that bad.

The break room at work has a massive fly problem. Managers aren't doing much about it. Bought some fly swatters the other day to fight back.


But yeah, ants suck too. I keep my peanut butter and sugar in sealed bags in the cabinet because of the ants.

That is not the definition of sentience.

Sentience is an emergent process.  Theres plenty of examples of fractional intelligence.

*Part of the problem identifying sentience is our own bias and senses.   An ai may not need to 'see' in order to be sentient.*

Ill settle for:

1) can recognize itself.  the mirror test, but obviously other similar methods can be used.
2) can communicate.  Ill take the piss plunge and say that things incapable of communication with others (me) may as well be non-sentient no matter what.


Number 2 though is really, really vague when you think about it.  Like for instance intracellular communication is communication and can show intelligent (design), but on a more grand scale one could say that a solar system has intra-system communication.  A galaxy has intra-galaxy communications.  But, for my purpose Ill say if it doesnt communicate in a way we can detect, after a good old college try, then its not sentient.
