Aren't parents supposed to encourage kids to think for themselves and develop their intellect, not do the exact opposite and act as thought police?
No. Religion begets religion, so their job as Christians is to make their children believe "because god".
They must think they went wrong with you so don't be surprised if they take that out on your sister. Isn't life grand.
To be fair that's a bit of a generalization. While religion does in fact encourage religion, there are plenty of Christians out there that take the "acceptance" part of their religion to be more important than the "get others to believe the same as you" part.

Of course if you're dealing with some of the less tolerant ones that believe in forcing blind faith on others, than stay strong, you and those in danger will pull through eventually, I know it. :)

It was a while since I read my catechism, but I can't recall a clause that said "Also must be willfully thick". It's always depressing to see people and churches pretend there is. I suppose I am basically mewling a #notallchristians right now, and I'm very sorry. I'm very upset with the attitude that "knowledge is baaaad!", since it helps reinforce the idea, on both sides, that faith and science are mutually exclusible. Hence why I think they're being very, very bad christians (And they're bad at many more important things, naturally. That is the least of it). Particularly because they use it as a vector to get to their children.

It's good that you encourage it where you can, and dear me, both of you deserve better. It might not seem very certain now, but I don't think they will succeed. Brightness and curiosity can't be undone, particularly not with your help and encouragement. It will blossom one day, and imagine how it will once you are both out of their shadows. Believe me, I am rooting for you both.

I thought a lot about a sort of Anime Roguelike I've seen and how it was sort of completely destroyed by midmaxing and lack of balance.

So I was like "Wait, why don't more games do a sort of ranking system?" I really wish I could get into game design.

While religion does in fact encourage religion, there are plenty of Christians out there that take the "acceptance" part of their religion to be more important than the "get others to believe the same as you" part.
They're bad Christians who are willingly letting everyone they care about go to hell.
But it's fine because they believe and so Pete'll still swing the pearlies for them despite their sins, and eternal bliss does wonders for helping you forget that there's all those people they loved too much to try and save.
The book really doesn't have that much flex, and neither do the books of many related faiths.

I have friends who are "good" Christians too, and believe me, the ones I've gotten to know incredibly well have in moments of weakness said one of three things:
1.  They'be given up on me and already shed enough tears over my eternal damnation.
2. They're absolutely terrified that I'll be hit by a bus tomorrow because they're playing the long game.
3. They're only in it for the shroedinger's ticket.

To forestall the inevitable, no I don't tie "good Christian" to "willfully thick".
But as every Democratic People's Republic has taught us, that angle has a great success rate, despite all those moral issues with it.

Yeah, or they just don't believe in Hell.  I've heard that we'll just stop existing (just like you want, right?) or Hell is a mediocre place that's simply apart from God, or maybe sinners reincarnated.  Or that good people are allowed to repent at the pearly gates if they want.

Nice people who just want everything to be okay, can't blame them for that.  Just seems naive, is all.

To store your pens in, in case they explode in your pocketses?
Unsurprisingly, I read this as "penis" at first, and was a little confused.
Ball pens do leak somewhat fierce in hard and hot conditions. I've used to have a lot of stains on my clothes due to me unwisely placing them close to my body heat, before I wisened up and start putting them in an enclosed compact space further away. Though, when it was really hot, they leaked even there.

Now, where was I going with that metaphor...

That's just the other end of "wilfully thick". Plus it flies in the face of the ol' instruction booklet.
They sound more like 3's to me. "I believe in the important thing, so I can believe whatever else I want.
No matter what, I'll still get in"

(just like you want, right?)
Reminds me how few religions promise a negative certainty for their believers.

wait shit

I didn't mean "metaphor", I meant that I really had problems with ball pens covering my clothes and my body through them with their hard-to-wash-away stuff

wait that doesn't sound any less suggestive

On the other topic:

Sometimes I say things like "God created the universe 30 seconds from now, and your memories are a test of your faith." If they say "But I exist NOW!" the answer, of course is, "No, you only remember having this conversation..." but that's just parody, and an extension of Last Tuesdayism/Thursdayism to make it even more absurd but still un-disprovable.

just FYI the "seven deadly sins" have nothing to do with the bible and are meant to cover every possible type of sin originally called the seven cardinal sins like ya know a compass showing all the possible directions of sin. the concepts gotten completely distorted to absurdity over the years.

I've never been sure where they came from, but had the impression it was either part of catholic doctrine, or from Dante's Divine Comedy, which seems* to have seeped into common understanding of christianity even by christians, somehow, despite not being a religious document in any way.

* I have read
(I have not read the Divine Comedy. I started to once, but found it rather boring. I have read the bible, or most of it, but it was over a decade ago now.)

Haha, good effort spoilering your beliefs and such. I somehow doubt you would've stepped on as many toes as I might have achieved in the last few pages though.
I mean, here's hoping I didn't particularly offend anyone, but I'm more realistically considering that I probably just irritated Christians and Atheists equally.

Man I love to watch gameplay videos and say something indignant like: "See, this here is what we call Building atmosphere" as a way to take a jab at the fact that few games actually do that.
