Well, you can see it like that: imagine a momentum of a particle with mass, slowly losing said mass while getting faster. Being faster means it effectively has more momentum per its real mass.

In the limit of zero-mass/light-speed, you get momentum = 0 (zero mass)/0(relativistic factor at light speed), which is a mathematical uncertainty - it can be equal to anything!

But because we live in a single fixed reality, it can only be equal to a single value. And that single value is the momentum for a massless light-speed particle.

You can see it as a mathematical breakdown of existent reality ending up in revelation of the fundamentally an qualitatively new part of reality. It is pretty weird, though.
