I don't... I don't see what you're not getting here. If you're really that confused, you might consider retaking grade-school grammar. Words can have more than one definition, usually somehow related to each other, and those definitions can change over time subject to both linguistic drift and the whims of the cultures in which they are employed. It really is a fascinating subject!

It's not appropriate in the context. Victim is more appropriate word to use than survivor because the situation matches the literal definition. A prescriptive approach works better when we want to be objective about what happened.

To be honest, the only reason I read the next book after the Colour of Magic was because I'd already read better Pratchetts and had faith in the author.

I had the same experience with Pratchett really. Tried reading Equal Rites a handful of times as a youth and couldn't do it. Now I have most of the books.
