Went to work today. The building smelled strongly gas. After an hour of calling people we got evacuated and stood around for a while before getting orders to transfer to another location (the joys of public sector work with strict union control and mandated hours, ayy). About thirty or forty minutes after we started working there, we got called back because Jesus came back to Earth and gave us the miracle of the gas-and-electric-monopoly company responding to a problem in the same week that it was reported. By the time we got back and started working, I had about fifteen minutes left on my shift.

Oh, and it was, predictably, a leak in the kitchens of the noombah juan china buffet dealie that's in our building.

Trees are sufficiently simple that you can do some weird stuff to them with weaving and grafting, yeah.

That and they're not considered to feel pain so the ethics clearance is easier to get.

Vagrancy is a problem.

We live in a society thats supposed to care and be nice, but its kind of refreshing to see people who dont care that they come off as less sensitive than others.


The benches work, and are only the latest in a line of products with blatent secondary features as deterents.  Prisons are uncomfortable deliberately, not just because it more cost efficient.  Stock gets rotated at stores to deliberately put the oldest stuff in front or more percisely to make it more convenient to grab the oldest first, and the police/military use their very presence as a deterant all the time.

Passive deterence is a lot less hostile than ignoring them as they sleep on their benches.  OR letting them sit there and beg for money.  As a matter of public safety/sanitation, its a lot less risky too.  It helps with general malcontent and unease, it helps attract (or not drive away, rather) money and capital, and the real downside is that it encourages the segregation of classes.  But then again its well established how detrimental a homeless population hanging around areas can be.  For business, for property values, for crime rates, for sanitation, for blight, for et al

Hey even Toronto tried to make it illegal to be homeless as a way to force the homeless to stop being homeless.

vagrancy as a crime is an old law/practice.  And in small areas it can be enforced well.  But in cities its unlikely to be effectively done.
  Besides the whole burden of proof element to it.

One wonders if they'd let the police apply the same logic to mentally damaged individuals with chainsaws outside their doors: "nobody should wish to harm others: this is a problem with the mental health system, we can't morally acknowledge it by responding to it.".
