Idunno if there's an active thread that would be more relevant, but this is a WTF and I wouldn't want to derail an existing thread with something that might be obvious.

Why do people like Captain America!? He is such a self-righteous fratboy tool.

Tony Stark released Ultron and had his share of cockups. But in Civil War, he realizes that maybe, just maybe, oversight might be a good thing sometimes, because sometimes unlimited power results in third world countries being devastated.

But Captain America just does not give a fuck about anybody's notions of "personal accountability" or "doing a better job on not killing dozens of civilians next time". He refuses to even acknowledge that the civilian deaths at the beginning of Civil War might have been preventable. He has this nonchalant "Eh, sometimes civilians die, watcha gonna do" attitude that makes him so incredibly punchable. And his "I'm right so fuck your rules" approach causes yet more civilian damage by starting a fight at an airport, destroying planes, rendering a runway unusable, and (of course) harming any civilians that may or may not have been around.

I wish Civil War was an Iron Man movie where Iron Man was inexplicably right about everything and vindicated of all wrongdoing. :/

Haven't seen the movie yet, but from what you're saying it sounds like they did this because of the ENORMOUS backlash they got from the comics version of Civil War. The one where Tony Stark basically goes full Hitler, complete with death camp.

More to the point, the higher-ups at Marvel were 100% pro-Stark during the comics version of Civil War, and were pissed that so many of the fans (and a lot of their writers, which should have been predictable because Marvel writers have always slanted left) sided with Cap. That's probably why they decided to make Captain America a Hydra agent now.

Naw the Marvel's hatred of Captain America goes back a long way as they always felt he was an out of place character championing America  that they pessimistically believe to be "dead" (Basically imagine Marvel is written by those people who hate Superman because "The American Way" part of him)

It is why they have MANY times killed him off, tried to replace him with a cold cynic, or replace him with a government tool.

Making him an Agent of Hydra is just one of the far dumber instances of this. Replacing him with Bucky being one of the few times they ever given half a damn to do it well.

I've heard a theory that the reason is because DC launched a whole new reboot/crossover/whatever the fuck they're calling it now with a bunch of twists, so Marvel needed to generate a contrasting buzz.

Well liked enough lots of people paid overpriced bookstore prices for it, mostly. It's like a crowdsourced reading recommendation for and from the fiscally lazy.

Selling points are about quantity, not quality. Bullet points and big gold awards are more immediately readable to an indecisive shopper than a thoughtful, well-written critique.
