Actually, he simply said he noticed the heat coming off of it(which is constant, it doesn't overheat), and suggested I turn it off when I leave, comparing it to a 100w bulb. Still, to power draw can't be that serious. Not compared to everything he leaves on all the time.

Yeah, it's not correct. Only a small amount of the energy from the 100w bulb is absorbed by the glass. Most of the bulb's energy is radiated as light, which lights the room and heats the room as a whole.

Whereas the entirely of the energy used by the modem is radiated as heat which heats up the modem directly. So even if they both get "just as hot" that's not the same as using the same amount of energy.
