It's interesting, the articles that have the headlines about 50% female gamers. It's cool that they want to promote the gender thing, but they end up saying some pretty convoluted stuff in those articles. e.g. this one was noting how a lot of people played the Kim Kardashian mobile game, and how dare us "gamers" not consider that a "real game" because after all, it makes a lot of money, so it must be good. Sort of like how Candy Crush is "real game" because of the profits. Of course games that don't push the agenda somehow aren't good - no matter how much money they make.

5 minutes of Candy Crush a day? You're a gamer now, if it will make our nice statistic fit the narrative. The problem is that in pushing the 50% line, things like quality game play and artistic merit go out the window.

I think to lump everyone together like that regardless of skill or dedication does more harm than good: it's supposed to get more women into serious gaming, but is that really going to happen when they've basically belittled gaming to the point that the most dedicated gamer gets no more respect than the 5 minute daily Candy Crush player? That's just as likely to scare women off from going any deeper into the hobby.

During a discussion thread on the Steam forum for Space Engineers, specifically this month's UESC contest, a joke came up, came up again, and I played around with it again.
Spoiler: Resulting in this (click to show/hide)

I should probably stop trying to 1-up people on Steam boards...

I probably don't remember that partially from mentally blocking the literal shitshow and partially from not reading it in english.

Double post, but it is worth it due to the WTF. Apparently, the portuguese wikipedia at some point unknown to me (but likely quite recent) decided to change their layout from being pretty much identical to the english one to... this. It's not horrible, mind you, but you'd think they'd want to keep some kind of standard layout across all versions.

I've read that book twice and I don't remember the scene. Praise be to brain bleach.

That actually looks pretty nice. If only I could read Brasilian.

I would tell you when it is, but spoilers and laziness.

It's either toward the end or the beginning (the books kinda run together. Pun not quite intended)

I used to like that show. They came up with fairly clever, fairly accurate solutions to problems. And then there was the dam episode. I don't think that's how concrete works...

There was a crack in a dam, and they had to fix the crack in ten minutes or something before the dam broke. So, instead of evacutaing everyone they could, and telling the rest to get to a secure location, they decide to put some weird freeze powder or something over the hole and use concrete to plug it on the other side. They then go on to unclog the turbines at the bottom by dropping explosives into them.

That ratio ignores all the however many (possibly way more) users that do not use steam while logged into their google accounts. So it doesn't tell us much except the stats for this very specific group (steam users who use steam while logged to google).

Not saying there isn't a gender skew, mind. Just that this doesn't tell us much outside these particular circumstances. Do we have any idea how many people fit into that group, and how many use steam in general?

Well we know that ~48% of Steam users were not logged into a google account. 2% were women logged into google, 50% were men logged into google. I think it's pretty convincing unless we can show that there would be some particular reason why women are more likely to not be logged into their gmail/youtube while browsing steam than men are.

I'm not saying "YOU'RE WRONG AND I REFUSE TO BELIEVE YOU" but I'd like to consider additional factors that could be affecting this:

Is it not the case that you cannot even log into Google in Steam? If I'm not mistaken about that, you'd have to have browsed one of Steam's sites in an actual browser. Assuming that whoever did the checking1 checked the google analytics for all of them, anyone that detected would have had to have been logged into google in that browser, not been blocking google analytics, and also have told google what your gender was (the choices google gives are (male | female | decline to state) and I'm going to wager the default is 'decline to state' rather than male). So you could be missed because you don't have a google account2, or haven't told google that you're a woman3, or because you have google analytics blocked4, or because you just never visited the steam homepage in a real browser.

1: Article said "Google Display Planner" but when I searched for that, I was redirected to AdWords, which apparently wanted me to buy ads
2: I know my mother didn't have one until she got an android phone, and doesn't even use the email associated with it. She has facebook and yahoo email. Of course, she doesn't use steam or even play games, so that doesn't mean anything. Obviously this isn't any kind of evidence, being just an anecdote, rather than data - but I don't think data should necessarily be trusted unconditionally either just because it's data - it may not actually reflect reality.
3: Maybe you don't want people bothering you on google+ or youtube or w/e; maybe you only have a google account for android and never set your gender in your account. Or you just haven't set it.
4: One of the default lists in umatrix blocks it, for example. My guess would be 'hpHosts’s Ad and tracking servers‎'. I don't know if this one is less likely than the others or not. I guess it would depend on the percentage of each gender which uses things like that.

"Discovered Data Recorder May Shed Light On the Mystery of El Faro - ABC"

Knowing a little about history, I didn't think it was all that mysterious. I guess this means I'll find out if my hypothesis is correct at some point, though!

Because of 100 mph (87 kn; 160 km/h) winds, very high seas and torrential rain, three destroyers capsized and sank, and 790 lives were lost. Nine other warships were damaged, and over 100 aircraft were wrecked or washed overboard; the aircraft carrier Monterey was forced to battle a serious fire that was caused by a plane hitting a bulkhead.

...

Damage to the fleet was severe. Some ships rolled more than 70 degrees. Three destroyers, Spence, Hickox, and Maddox, had nearly empty fuel stores (10-15% of capacity) and therefore lacked the stabilizing effect of the extra weight and thus were relatively unstable. Additionally, several other destroyers, including Hull and Monaghan, were of the older Farragut-class and had been refitted with over 500 long tons (510 t) of extra equipment and armament which made them top-heavy.

Spence, Hull, and Monaghan either capsized or were sunk after water flooded down their smokestacks and disabled their engines. Without power, they were unable to control their heading and were at the mercy of the wind and seas. Hickox and Maddox pumped seawater into their empty fuel tanks, adding enough stability to ride out the storm with relatively minor damage.

Only those three ships capsized and sunk:

Quote
USS Hull - with 70% fuel aboard, capsized and sunk with 202 men drowned (62 survivors)[3]
USS Monaghan - capsized and sunk with 256 men drowned (six survivors)[3]
USS Spence - rudder jammed hard to starboard, capsized and sunk with 317 men drowned (23 survivors) after hoses parted attempting to refuel from New Jersey because they had also disobeyed orders to ballast down directly from Admiral Halsey[3]

Throughout September 30 into the morning of October 1, Joaquin continued to track southwest.[11] Just 10 hours after departing, El Faro was steaming at full speed and deviating from its charted course. According to Klaus Luhta of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots, Davidson continued to head directly into the storm.[18] Joaquin became a hurricane by 8:00 a.m. on September 30, then rapidly intensified.[11][19] The storm reached Category 3 intensity by 11:00 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kn (185 km/h; 115 mph).[20] Around 7:30 a.m. on October 1, less than 30 hours after the ship sailed from Jacksonville, the United States Coast Guard received a satellite notification that the vessel had lost propulsion, taken on water—though flooding was contained at the time of the message—and had a 15-degree list.[21] According to TOTE Maritime, the loss of propulsion is what ultimately sealed the fate of El Faro, leaving the vessel helpless within the approaching hurricane.[9] Near the same time, the Coast Guard also received a single ping from the ship's Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon.[22] Subsequent attempts by the Coast Guard to open communications with El Faro were unsuccessful.[23]

TL;DR: I think the engines were disabled by the water because it couldn't keep from being tipped one way and then the other by the waves. Maybe it even went down the smokestack to get to them.
