Haven't actually played the Nuclear Family ending of fallout, but the glimmers I've gotten seem to indicate that synths are basically programmed to display all of the necessary signs of humanity.

It's sort of like a p-zombie argument.
Do they actually feel love, or are they programmed to act as though they feel love?

The question that's really going to give you a headache is, does it matter? Are humans even different in that regard?

My opinion is we shouldn't even create AIs human enough to deserve rights. A machine should be a machine; making it more than that will introduce moral dilemmas for little practical gain.

There's also the simpler solution where we grant rights to AIs human enough to deserve them, and enslave AIs which are created to be enslaved.

The thing is, if you built it to not like being enslaved then use it as a slave, then you're more fucked up than the guy who built the AI that likes being a slave.
