Ah, Bethesda. Their game engine is probably more complicated than real life.
I dunno, these bugs all sound pretty reasonable.

"Sleeping ... in your own house no longer summons the city guards."
- Probably checks if you're friendly with the homeowner, but missed the check if you're friendly with yourself

"The Dark Brotherhood [assassins' guild] no longer offers the same quests as the Fighters Guild."
- Someone copy-pasted code and forgot to change "fighters_guild" to "dark_brotherhood" or whatever

"Arrows no longer wrap around to 0 when you get more than 200 of them."
- They tried to address integer overflow but it didn't work (hence 200 instead of 255)

"Illegally bashing down doors no longer gives you a revered legal reputation when you are caught."
- reputation+X instead of -X

"When you are infected by a werewolf, you now become a werewolf instead of a wereboar."
- Typos

"You can now leave your items for repair in the shops and they will remain there even when you leave the town."
- The items aren't saved when the town is offloaded

"You can now use potions when you are silenced."
- Potions use the same code as spellcasting

This makes some sense if we assume the silence spell works by sowing the target's mouth shut or the like. It doesn't do that in later games, but I would have just left that bug in.

I believe the potions thing would be similar to being able to silence giant spiders thus making them unable to paralyse you via biting. Like in Morrowind, creature abilities are spells they cast, usually on touch. Think the Squibs and Shulks.

Daggerfall is such a buggy game, even after the patches. Looking at even earlier patch notes should have some more interesting entries.

You know how people complain that VR is always going to be troublesome to set up and use on short notice?
I wonder if making a public VR arcade would be possible.

It'd certainly be elegant to come full-circle like that.

Though I imagine that we'll also have home-installed VR pods for the inevitable MMOs and porn.

Doesn't sound very safe compared to arcades, since you wouldn't be able to see someone walking up to steal your wallet.

Call me once we get full-immersion a la SAO. Minus the whole mortal danger thing, obviously.

Honestly, the whole economy system that arcades depended on is simply just not viable anymore, doubly so with the whole interest in modern technology being making things that people can take with them and use on the fly (one of the big factors in the huge interest in mobile app stuff nowdays). There's a very slim chance it might happen as we start to get to full immersion rig stuff, but it's much more likely that when it finally booms onto the screen someone will develop a fairly cheap harness or something similar you can set up in your house and use to remove the whole "huge amount of space needed" requirement which is really the biggest thing holding VR back right now (other than the fact that there just aren't many mainstream headsets available for purchase yet or content to consume on them).

The big thing with arcades was that at the time the hardware and software were pretty solidly linked, and the computational power required to run that sort of level of stuff just wasn't as easily available to the modern consumer who would use it, meaning the cost was high enough to place them out of reach for personal ownership, but still in reach for businesses that would then be able to recoup the high cost of the machine through the money they made. Compare that to today where the computational power required for basic VR is already in the hands of most of the people currently buying VR headsets, and that's only going to become more true as time goes by (current bottom estimates for a VR-able machine are in the $1-2k range, a number that is only going to go down as time goes by, and is something that is already very commonly owned already for the vast majority of people willing to drop a few hundred bucks on a single hardware accessory :P).

Doesn't sound very safe compared to arcades, since you wouldn't be able to see someone walking up to steal your wallet.
If one ended up existing, it would probably be more like a big warehouse of empty rooms/smaller rooms with harnesses than anything like an old school arcade. You'd check out a room for a given amount of time, and the only other people present would be any who might be playing the game with you.

Though I imagine that we'll also have home-installed VR pods for the inevitable MMOs and porn.
For what it's worth, the last one has already been announced. :P

Patched Daggerfall after finding a bug that made the game crash if you tried to save after getting a weapon repaired. I was curious what else it fixed and pulled open the patch notes, finding some rather amusing bugs:
Quote
Sleeping ... in your own house no longer summons the city guards.

The Dark Brotherhood [assassins' guild] no longer offers the same quests as the Fighters Guild.

Arrows no longer wrap around to 0 when you get more than 200 of them.

Illegally bashing down doors no longer gives you a revered legal reputation when you are caught.

When you are infected by a werewolf, you now become a werewolf instead of a wereboar.

You can now leave your items for repair in the shops and they will remain there even when you leave the town.

You can now use potions when you are silenced.
What :'D
They patched Daggerfall?

I'm SO SALTY! Super Nintendo Games like Earthbound and Super Mario World have finally arrived at the 3DS e-shop... but they're all NEW 3DS exclusives?! I just don't get it, the standard 3DSXL can do all this awesome shit, render large, detailed 3D environments and characters... but I need a hardware upgrade to emulate 20 year old games? What the actual fuck Nintendo?

Playing devil's advocate here, but emulation do require superior hardware due to the necessity to simulate the workings of old OSes.

Alternatively, they're just evil.
