I can either start my Visual Novel and piss people who tried to enter but didn't have a valid character...

Or start a RPG Maker MV Project and piss off everyone AND possibly not get any entries.

But with RPG Maker at LEAST people would be able to understand what the limitations are. There is no vagueness of "You need a picture of a character from the thighs up, without any of the sides cut" but instead a "The character MUST fit in this box" thing.

Because language direction is arbitrary and that's what the first writers of Arabic chose*. You might as well ask why English/Euro is left to write :V

It's not the only written language read that way, Japanese is too I believe. And maybe Chinese. Although one could read Chinese and Japanese up top down in columns. Well, you can do that in English, just looks a bit awkward.
