Actually, I figured it out after a bit. He got the name Redbeard because he disemboweled people and made beard wigs out of their intestines. Game didn't say a thing about it, but that's my headcanon now.

I can only imagine he's a former pirate now because that netted him like five thousand different venereal diseases and other blood transmitted pathogens and he's no longer capable of unassisted movement, but hey, hell of a nickname.

Played War Thunder.
There was a patch to install with some new vehicles and all.
I recently unlockerd the SU-152... a tank destroyed with a giant 152 mm gun and so far high caliber HE shells were very effective...
Well not anymore! Shot the side of a sherman jumbo and all it did was tear the tank threads.
Basically large caliber HE no longer causes spalling. and will only penetrate armor if it's thin... like very thin.

And we are talking about HE shells with a lot of explosives stuffed inside. The one i'm talking about has 5.9 kilos of TNT (13 pounds). That ammount of explosives could literally crack and deform armor of the heaviest tanks availble during WW2.

If you hit the tracks, you lose most of the effect. Take it out in test drive mode a few time.

It should be noted that the ML-20 howitzer, the one they used in SU-152 and ISU-152 and did things like this (HE shell to Panther turret) and this (AP shell to Sturmpanzer IV side).
But yeah, tracks eat shells very effectively. I remember I got shoot by IS-2 in Panzer III M (I took it to check if I could manage to actually kill anything at that BR, I think I did kill some T-34s from side or something) in my track from side and it didin't even break, it got orange. The next shoot of course wrecked me, but that was expected.

I guess i screwed up with the second shot because the jumbo has a tough turret... but i kinda expected the shell hit radiate downward and set off an ammorack or something.
Aaand then i realized that i can't do a thing with HE shells and bailed the tank.

There was no change to HE mechanics in the last patch (solid shot seems to have been boosted.) Like I said, use test drive a bit and play with it.

I did. I noticed that i can't pen the tier 1 tank with 88 mm HER shells anymore.
For a time it was possible to damage that T-26 and Pz2c with 85-88 mm shells but it's no longer the case.

I'm really suspecting a stealth HE nerf.

EDIT: "Damage inflicted by HE-F ammunition (including APHE ammo and rockets for ground vehicles) is now calculated more accurately according to explosive type and weight."

Looks like i was right and HE got less powerful.
