It's not just slimer. They also fight a horrible world-destroying evil in the form of a big marshmallow man. The movie has all sorts of goofy crap. "Silly" is the entire point.

It was a comedy played straight though. It didn't require a great deal of suspension of disbelief to enjoy it, even Bill Murray acting like Bill Murray. Basically just the ghosties. (or Gnostics, according to autocorrect. My phone is awesome sometimes)
