There were actually a couple kids back in my middle school years that had already had something like half a decade of percussion practice. Started when they were something like seven, eight. They were pretty damn good on the bongos. Also the more standard drum set and a few other things.

...In all seriousness, I don't practice nearly as often as I really should.  (I play violin.)

I practice my chosen form of art on a nearly-regular basis by finding a reason to be semi-obligated to do it. Likely harder to do with musical instruments than writing, however.

Okay so I went to pick up some beer (because I have dealt all that I can deal today), and I drive back to the complex.  But as I get close to my spot, there's this car and these dudes in the road?  And they're, mm, slow to notice me.  Even I realize they're drunk.

So I pull into an earlier parking spot, no big deal.  I get out and ask them about the party.  Sounds like it's cool, I could be there right now... fuck, actually, I really should clean up and go back there.  I still might.  But it's been so long... Not the point of the story!!

Suddenly this college girl comes up the steps to the road, approaches me, and puts her hands on my cheeks.  I'm briefly disgusted by my stubble, but also impressed at how soft her hands are, and how earnestly she's gazing into my eyes.  Is she going to...?

'hey' she whispers, so quietly.  I lean in a little to hear, but she's already so close.

I blink.  I don't normally smell things, but... I do now.  It's sweetly, and delicate.  I walk among flowers pretty often, and they don't smell like this.  This is what city folk think flowers smell like.

Her face looks nice, too.  It's pretty, without looking fake.  And she looks happy, in an easy-going way.  I'd like to look like that.  And, regardless orientation, I don't want to make this person unhappy.

"Uh, yeah sure!"  I didn't choose the words, I hear them from my mouth.

She beams, and my heart lifts.  She repeats her query as a statement, now that we're in agreement.  I nod happily as she releases my face. 

I reach for my case of beer, and she worriedly asks if I'm driving.  She's drunk, of course... but, still!  So sweet!  I assure her that I am driving no more tonight.  She smiles and wanders off to talk to her friends.

I walk along to the next building.  Down the steps, unlock the door, lock the door, set down my beer, sit in solitude.  Do I want to go back there?  Just for an hour?  Despite all that happened recently?

Perhaps because of all that happened recently.
