The book we're studying in French class reads like a bad erotic fanfiction. Like. Wow. This shit is terrible. Really terrible. Like. Bluh. I need to cleanse my brain, preferably with fire.

Basically, we have the story of a refugee coming from Liban[That's the French name. Not sure what it is in English] to Montreal. As is established[Vigorously] in the first few pages, he's hella hot. Every girl in the high school he goes to is throwing herself at him. He stoically rejects them and broods his way through the first few chapters with poorly written journal entries. Then a girl from his class is getting molested by some delinquents and the main character charges in and saves her, sustaining a major stab wound in the process. So far, just a meh. Then we get into the second part of the book, which is a lot worse. Its a flashback to his life in Liban It opens up with ten or so pages of describing just how hot his romantic interest there is[With extra emphasis on how abnormally large her boobs are]. Then she is unceremoniously killed by a bombardment so the main character can get together with her twelve-year old loli sister[Who is often mistaken for much younger then she actually is]. They travel together[Sharing a tent] to a port town so they can escape to Canada, with some vaguely-sexual-shenanigans happening. Then, when the main character "accidentally" starts groping her while asleep and apologizes, she gets huffy and goes off on her own.

TL;DR of it is, she ends up dead in a rather unpleasant fashion and the main character gets to Canada.

The third part of the book is just wrapping up the first part and everyone gets along just fine in the end[Including the delinquents from earlier, somehow?]. Kinda dumb, but not AS bad.


Its entirely separate from the other bad stuff, but characters also frequently get multi-page rants, something which annoys me to no end. They're quite clearly the author anvilling you with a message and the message is either dumb as fuck or downright repulsive[Usually both].

I'm not sure what to WTF more about: That the Canadian government actually subsidized this or that our sweet and innocent French teacher is assigning this to us to read.

Nothing unusual happens. The game operates as normal. The creature doesn't even show up in the arena. It's loading, oh, I can tell, the loading screen is a hot mess, but nothing actually shows up.

So... the dupe raws bug doesn't trigger with largely empty creature objects? That's really interesting. Pls research more. Would also be nice if Toady knew what/why it happened.

Last time I accidentally duped raws, everyone wore clothes made of fat, had skin of cloth (silk, I think?), there were creatures with no bodies whatsoever, and everybody somehow had the ability to hide at will.

I duped raws for Science a while back. I embarked as usual only to find that all my dwarves were humans and the pack animals were dragons. The soil was also made of purple "atrocious vapour" or something that I could build with.

School can assign weird books at times.

In grade 12 we had a book we had to read about a homeless asshole who mistreats everyone around him, only to find the love of his life after he sent her to the hospital by throwing bricks off a bridge, and onto incoming traffic below. His life ends up great afterwards. Though, the teacher did admit to re-writing parts of the book. She said it was too depressing for her, so she changed some parts, including the entire last chapter.

Another in grade 11 about a 14-year-old sold into prostitution by her father, and focused on how it's her fault.

In grade 10 there was a book called Leslie's Journal. About a girl who ends up with an incredibly abusive and manipulative stalker/boyfriend. Teacher focused quite a bit on how it's her fault. Though she still kicked one asshole out of class for shouting "wow, she's a slut" in class.

What little I remember from my french classes 15 years ago makes me certain that almost all french literature reads like bad erotic fanfiction.
I don't actually remember much of the books we were forced to read, but I remember that the usual reaction among my class was pretty much always along the lines of "the fuck did I just read, I don't even".

I've managed to usually get relatively normal books assigned, although they're not always the greatest--Of Mice and Me is supposed to be a play. It shows. Badly.

Although we did get this one that was sort of weird, although nowhere near as weird as Kōhai's; the weirdness was mostly contained in the end, thankfully. The idea is that, back in the 70s, this Chinese-American girl is found drowned in a lake. The book is about her family's gradual descent into madness over her death; her father gets into an affair, her brother gets all angsty, her sister withdraws from the world even more, and her mother... she just kind of gets vaguely hysterical, but the book can't decide if she's being reasonable when arguing with the father or if she's been listening to the fledgling sensational mass-media too much.

The characters (mostly the brother) try to find out why she died. He eventually starts thinking she was in a relationship with this slacker kid, then that went south and led to her death, while her mother is convinced it's a serial killer until the very end of the book. Meanwhile the father is having wildly unnecessary non-explicit sex scenes while the remaining sister just kind of sits under the table and watches her parents fight while having flashbacks to when her sister was alive.

Toward the end, the book goes into a lot of flashbacks and explains that the dead girl was really angsty that her mom was living vivaciously through her and trying to get her to be a doctor, but she couldn't bring herself to tell her mom; she was also vaguely enraged and fearful about how her brother was going off to college, because ever since he saved her from drowning when they were little she's been super-duper attached to him. Up to this point the book has mostly made sense (although I still question the necessity of describing how a table has "FUCK" engraved into it) and has been somewhat relatable, albeit to rather specific crowds.

Then it's revealed that everything was a red herring and the girl was being a moron and decided to learn to swim in the middle of the night to symbolically get over her need for her brother, so she paddled out into the middle of the lake and dove in.
