Yep. American colleges can ban you from ever coming back if you forget to site the ever-living hell out of your papers.
If you can't be bothered to cite sources (or worse, gods help your instructors, don't bother finding support for assertions that aren't common knowledge), you shouldn't be in academics. At all. Attribution is critical not only because it properly gives credit for peoples' work, but also because it's an important tool for future researchers. That, and more importantly to lazy uni students, it's dead-easy to do even if you're in a field that uses a formatting-heavy style like Chicago. Most use APA, and if you're in English lit. you're using MLA, both of which are almost ludicrously simple.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

-snip-

I can understand their frustration. A Supreme Court appointment to replace Scalia is almost certainly going to be pretty partisan with the court so closely divided. The prospect of having a lame duck president replace one of their most reliable ideological allies with an elite liberal judicial activist (not saying it's guaranteed to happen, but it's not impossible either) should be frustrating, I would think.

I know it's easy, and most of the time I have no problem with it. But it's difficult to make up a research paper that you don't want to write, and make up sources that sound legit.

If you're creating sources from whole cloth, you're going to get nailed sooner or later. And if you're not enjoying your field... why are you in it? Even if you're stuck taking gen-eds outside your field, those are basically just high school with shittier desks and less work.

It's not optional. We are being required to write a research paper about our own names, and how they represent us. We will then be graded on how correct we are. The entire paper is like a shitpost with a terrible aftertaste, cooked up by someone on meth made in a rusty cup half-full of joe.

So I just swapped my mouse from right-handed to left-handed mode. It's wierd, coming from close to 8 years of right-handed computer use and suddenly learning to be left handed.

Meh, you know they'd totally do that and worse if the shoe were on the other foot. Even so, Scalia was as politically biased as one could get. Frustration for them? Yes. Unforeseen? no.

They knew this was a possibility for years, and frankly it is conservatives' own fault for a.) insisting on staying in office until they literally die (compare and contrast liberal judges retiring instead of stubbornly dying in office), and b.) insisting upon appointing older people.

They should've seen this coming from a mile away. Sandra Day O'Conner did. She left and let them appoint someone younger to take her place. Scalia had been there since Regan, just like O'Conner. If they were that worried about it, they could've taken some steps, but no. He knew he was almost 80 (79 years old) and steadfastly refused to acknowledge his own mortality, which did not help him one bit.

They literally decide to die in office, with absolutely no succession plan, and then complain about the inevitable consequences of that.

jesus h what sort of shit are you taking

I mean I spent a semester with a Baptist and a class mostly from his congregation who turned a low-level philosophy course into me and him arguing over theology when he wasn't baiting the sheep into bashing the Stoics, and that was heaven compared to whatever that horseshit is. Sounds like something cooked up by some shithead Creative Writing major who dropped out and started up a tumblr.

Because that is there entire plan. They might have a more sensible one somewhere, or a less obvious one I haven't noticed as someone who does not follow politics especially closely, but publicly the republicans seem to have decided that complaining until they get thrown out or otherwise can't stall/delay/make difficult everything they are not forced to pass is the best idea since bush left and doing otherwise is against america, or worse, not republican.

And this is why I'm waiting for there to be a hostile takeover of the US government. Or maybe I'll take it over. I've got the plans all layed out already.
