I was wondering what textbooks cost these days, now that I've been out of college for half a decade. $250 for one book is about as bad as I'd expect it to be. I never walked out of the bookstore in a good mood. Ever.

I'm seriously tempted to call some of these bookstores advertising the book through Amazon and try to figure out WTF is with this price. I'll definitely check back tomorrow and see if the price is still the same, because it seems like some insane value got dropped into everyone's pricing matrix.

Fortunately bookstores can let you rent textbooks for a fraction of the cost. My pre-used calculus textbook cost $30 for a semester of use. New and purchased it would've cost at least $120. I'll have to rent it again for next semester, but it's still cheaper than buying it.

So far, I've been incredibly lucky. My textbook last term was free, and this one will be 7 dollars new, because the teacher decided the official one was too expensive and made his own for the school to print.

I used to work in a community college bookstore. We did rentals. And buybacks. The number of idiots who did not understand the concept of "rental"...

"Why don't I get to keep the book afterwards?"

"Can I sell it back to you after the semester?"


The guys doing the campus tours would directly say to buy the books online... and they'd say this right in front of the store - which was not owned by the college. It used to be owned by Barnes & Noble, then Follet. The just used space on the campus.

Depending on book, they'd range from $100 to $300 usually. Some more, some less. English books were usually cheaper, most were just novels and such anyway. Math was the bank breaker.

Which is probably why my precalc/trig teacher decided the official textbooks were too expensive. :V

Monopolies on "necessary" goods, mostly. Despite the temptation to pin it on them, the universities and third-party bookstores aren't the real culprit. It's just the spirit of capitalism merrily at work.
