I assume the intend is to create a 'rugged manly' smell (So nothing like how I should smell really xD). But the end result is it mostly just smells like delicious cinnamon.
Rugged manly and Cinnamon...

CinnaMan scent?

So after about 30 goddamn seconds messing with my laptop, because he thinks it might connect to the TV screen better than the linux so we can watch a film on that getting it from the computer, my dad has spectacularly buggered up the mouse-pad thing on the keyboard.

After a few minutes of normal function, it freezes completely, and won't move or click till I restart. I have no fucking idea how he even managed to do this.

Oh look, there it goes again. Going to have to navigate with tab for a bit, I guess. And we're on holiday and my parents need all the mice for their computers. I could try and teach my mother how to use the "tap" function of her laptop's mousepad, as she broke her clicking bit so needs a mouse, but the stress of her adjusting to clicking in a new way, as well as using the toolbars at the top of icons, would be far too great to contemplate.

Incidentally, does anyone know how on earth somebody (reasonably tech savvy) could break a mousepad in this way, apparently by trying to put a cable for a screen in a certain socket?

I am not really tech savvy, but have you tried messing around in the mouse and touchpad settings?

I had a look, couldn't get the touchpad working, but mousekeys seems useable, if irritating as hell and only slightly faster than tab.

Maybe they're just to make him look smarter?

Edit: Ugh, it was annoying enough how people seem to interpret me responding to a knock on the door with "What?" as meaning "Come in," but now they seem to think there is no need to knock at all before barging in. At this rate I will have to boobytrap my fucking bedroom door. Maybe some punji stakes or some sort of swinging spike trap.

Oh, it doesn't have a lock. I've considered getting one... but that seems somewhat less exciting (and would involve a similar amount of effort/expense) than gruesomely impaling my pesky housemates on wooden spikes when they forget to knock. :P

Most laptops come with some sort of trackpad utility program, which tends to have options that include locking the pad (often bound to hotkeys). If it's consistently happening, my guess is there's a setting for locking after a length of inactivity. Whatever the conditions are, try to reproduce it and find that utility. Another thing it could be is a loose cable or something, which would be super easy to fix (but find the utility first).

*shrug*
I mean, you could just change the handle itself, if it doesn't have a way to keep from turning.
