Smartass response rising... and I am letting it go. Can we just drop it and move on?

Soo... A friend of mine recently tried a pickup line on the new girl (This was ~ a month ago) and managed to get himself escorted to sick bay.

You can't decide what makes a valid language around the Cold War. It's over. Let go.

There's probably more speakers of pidjin English than all English English dialects put together though.

Not the same pidjin English dialect tho.

Damnit, missed the conversation about language, and I had like two paragraphs written up for it, too!

"Hair straightener" is disgusting lowbrow slang. That's as bad as... calling something you don't like "literally Hitler" or whatever.
And I probably would move to America if I could afford it. Not because I "love it so much," but because it is at least better than here.

Edit: Also, don't you dare "M8" at me you chav. You are from Britain, right? If not, switch 'chav' for 'bogan'.
My impressionable housemates picked up the awful habit of saying "mate" all the time whilst I was away for a month and a half in September and I am still trying to beat it out of them. Ugh.

Yeah nah mate, hair straightener is the accepted term in america too. I feel like chucking a shrimp on the barbie and masticating a steak now.

In all seriousness, I don't know what you're so worked up about. Surely it was only more intense in Queensland, and australianisms are comparatively light here in Vic.

Guess she decided 206 intact bones is a few too many.

Why is it that evil Germans in fiction always have Aryan Blood...

But it is actually quite uncommon?

I always found their fascination with a particular phenotype they do not possess to be part of the irony of the ole uberman.

Just went on a strange, impromptu drive with friends through the spooky-looking parts of the suburb in the middle of the night.
Started off just going to get pizza and ended up exploring, looking at an abandoned house and bumping along down some overgrown track next to a train line (which had an odd assortment of debris scattered around it) and onto this flat, grassy plain under a railway bridge.

Was pretty creepy... I'm pretty sure I saw a couple of people sitting out there on a slope as we drove past, too.

Canada is selling eight million bottles of air to China.
As President of China, I can assure you and your viewers that there's absolutely no air shortage whatsoever.

For some stupid fucking reason Australian websites refer to straightening irons as "hair straighteners"- searching for straightening irons pulls up a bunch of overseas sites. Learn how to fucking English you miserable fucking bogans. I suppose the real WTF here is just how angry this makes me.

I think I shall have to order one from the US instead just to avoid this travesty of language.

Also, what the hell is a straightening iron? Sounds like something you'd use in metallurgy. Whereas 'Hair Straightener' is exactly what it says on the tin.

Go and eat a peanut butter and jam sandwich if you're so American.

Funny story, American English is closer to traditional English than the modern Queen's English, at least structurally. Remember all those little differences in spelling and such? The Brits instituted those changes within the past few centuries definitely just because they wanted to differentiate themselves from us uppity colonials. More than a few American dialects of English are almost spot-on for much, much older pre-Revolution British dialects--in particular the speech patterns of the denizens of Appalachia and of classic Southern gentlefolk.

So yeah. American English is actually proper English. Suck it, England.

@FD's quoted stuff: ... also, it's peanut butter and jelly. Even when it is made with jam, most americans are going to call it peanut butter and jelly. If you're going to make the joke, at least get the terminology right :-\

And yeah, the air thing. From what I understand, it's not exactly the most unusual thing... odder is perhaps no one else got in on it at that scale, yet. China has some hella' skank air in places. Strange though it may seem, buying some air that won't kill you from someone else is attractive under those circumstances.
