It should also be noted that the Hist are actually a post-singularity civilization from the last akashic cycle who survived the end of their universe and settled on Nirn for reasons unclear (perhaps merely to continue on existing). The Argonians are their artificial creation and receive uploading service so long as they remain in proximity to Blackmarsh, on the other hand, they lack true free will unless they move far enough away to disconnect from the system. Drinking Hist sap actually allows temporary communion with the gestalt mind contained in a Hist tree, hence why it can be a risky endeavor.

the Time Establishing Event (I forget what exactly this was called, so let's go with that)
The Dragon Break, also known as "Fuck it, everything's canon. Yes, even the complete destruction of Tamriel."

No, the Dragon Break was when Akatosh (aka The Many-Headed Dragon, aka Time itself), well, done broke, and time went back to being non-linear for some until his servants "fixed" him. Time was linear between the Time Establishing Event and the Dragon Break.

Putnam's argument:
"Language is used for communication. If your idea is adequately conveyed, then the language is correct."

Other people's argument:
"Language follows precedent. If your speech/writing/whatever doesn't follow that precedent, then it is incorrect (unless the variant enters common usage)."

Since we can get into this:

These are called description and prescription. Proper linguists are pretty much unanimous on linguistics being a descriptive science. Prescription is pedantry and not much more.

Excellent job presenting that in an informative and wholly unbiased manner.

i had a dumb analogy about evolution denialists, but then i realized it's not so much denial of evolution that i'm complaining about there as denial of biologists

there've been multiple; I'm pretty sure you're referring to the Middle Dawn, the particular dragon break that lasted for "1008 years" in the first era (though obviously by its very nature giving a specific length of time is not possible for that situation). There was also the Warp in the West and, heck, I get the feeling that the Soulburst or w/e it's called in Online is similar, though that AFAIK is far more messed up (in a good way, that game's lore is fucked (in a good way))

Technically the world was supposed to end in The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, but the Dragonborn got Alduin to fuck off so we have to deal with more years of medieval fantasy.

The spaceships and robots are all lostech, though.
Robots are, but spaceships are not, though. Both empire and aldmeri dominion use them with some regularity. Hell, there was even a game that took place in one (Battlespire).

And so we have entered yet another TES derail.

Wouldn't denial of biologists be denial of linguists?
That being, a person to tell us what species/dialect an animal/word is.

Except the fields of linguistics and biology currently follow completely opposite trends- that being the closer towards the beginning of our evolutionary process, the more difficult it is to term something as "animal", whilst currently, the newest 'words' are the most difficult to identify as "language".

There was a table in the University Atrium today with a sign on it. First time I went past, someone was standing in front of it, so all I could see was "Free th...", so I didn't pay much attention.

When I went past again, I could see the whole sign. It said "Free the nipple". Many WTFs were had.

*shrugs* It probably wouldn't map properly anyways, given the difference between hard science and linguistics. I mean, the latter is literally semantics (at least in part); there's no objective truth behind language, it's just quibbling over whether it's worthwhile to try to establish artificial objectivity to some degree. Middle ground's for me on that: hardline prescriptivism is stupid because language has to change, hardline descriptivism is stupid because it excuses willful ignorance and laziness as part and parcel of integrating real linguistic shifts and emergent dialects. Both are ultimately detrimental to clarity and depth of meaning in a given language.

I'd sort of agree with FD, but add a circumstantial element - colloquialisms for example are descriptive, and all well and good in normal speech to a friend. Prescriptive speech is better for your boss. Same with writing, e.g. text versus C.V.

Really, it doesn't matter how you say something. Personally I lean on the prescriptive side in most of my speech/communication, no matter the circumstance, though.

It's an obvious message, it's unethical to eat anything but free range nipple. Factory farming is wrong and quite frankly the nipples deserve better.
