When a child grows up hearing nothing but how special and great they are from anybody in a position of authority (and many parents who raise kids with this philosophy go to great lengths to discourage teachers from challenging the notion), they do not exceed mediocrity. They often fail to even achieve mediocrity, because they believe -because they have been told so since birth- that they have transcended it from the very beginning, and are better than everyone else because of it. I've worked with several such people - young folks so convinced of their great destiny that they are trapping themselves in dead-end work because they view said dead-end work as beneath them, forever dooming their chances of advancement in any profession.

Its not that you shouldn't think well of yourself, but you need to realize that you need to work your potential and actualy improve yourself, not just pretend you're crystal dragon jesus sue and everyone will love you and give you things just because of who you are (or think you are).

No, no, I mean, yes.  Of course is not healthy to go around thinking you are a piece of shit or something along those lines. A good and healthy self stem is after all at the core of a good life. I think the problem is when it is inflated beyond ego limits and self entitlement beings. So instead of "well you are a good person my son, keep it up you'll grow up to be somebody in life" parent go "you are perfect the way you are, you are the most gorgeous and better person in everything, you are really really especial and everyone should acknowledge that..." Just an example.

Heck sometimes that conduct is very tied to low self-stem.
