But the word for Mom is extremely similar in almost all languages. To the point where having something different is the exception.

The only theory for this I heard of is that "Mom"/"Mum"/"Mam" is one of the few natural sounds a baby will make towards its mother.

I think it's not so much "towards mother" as people hearing a baby babbling all "mamamamamamamama" and then the mother is like "YES THAT'S ME" and the baby ends up all conditioned to go "mamamama" near mama because then mama gives attention and gets excited

same for "papa" or "dada", which is also very cross-langauge
