I was just reading how the Shelly, the wife of scientology leader David Miscavage, disappeared in 2005, one week after confiding in people (who since have fled the organization) that she was in some deep shit with the leadership. Several former members have claimed something happened to her (murder perhaps, but probably held in the special prison they have for dissidents), but in a turn straight out of Weekend at Bernies the Scientology high command have insisted in a public statement that she's alive and well and having a ball running things from behind the scenes. Despite the fact that she vanished and none of her close friends heard from her in over a decade. So yeah, Scientology will disappear you then deny you're missing.

Can you imagine a country run by these people? That would be scary.
