It's full of SFW fanarts too, and interesting art blogs and such.  I pretty much see it as a bunch of art blogs.  Where sometimes people post/repost heavily opinionated stuff, but not often on the ones I like.  All that stuff it's famous for seems to happen on accounts I'm not seeing.

It's a pretty awful interface for following a conversation, much less a proper debate.  Full of pretty images though.

The thing about tumblr is that you're only going to see what you deliberately look for. So pretty much everything someone posts about tumblr is an accurate assessment, just maybe not of the parts you frequent.

It's accurate excepting that they imply, or outright say, the entire website is like that.

It's like a sharing-oriented version of Reddit, instead of a discussion oriented version. There's a LOT of different, wildly disparate subreddits, and a lot of wildly disparate Tumblr's.

I guess Reddit has the same kind of image problem, though. People have an ingrained view of what a Redditor is, same as they have an ingrained view of a Tumblrite.

SocJus Tumblr pokes its nose into and spreads to every other facet of the site too though. They bother porn artists, non-porn artists, writers, gamers, schmucks who said a thing one time...
About as analogous to a cancer as a "community" can be.

I guess I just find it strange to behave as though that has anything to do with Tumblr in particular? You get the same basic behavior over Twitter, Facebook, and presumably Reddit. Any medium that gets large enough is going to collect enough sociopaths sufficient to generate the hate machine effect, when it enables targeted conversations like that. The difference between "tits or gtfo" and "This art is highly problematic because of its portrayal of women" or whatever is purely cosmetic, far as I can tell.

I mean, at the scale Tumblr occupies, the problem isn't Tumblr's particular community, it's humans. Just generic, unchanging human nature. Talking about how it's a problem with Tumblr is just a convenient way to turn it into yet another tribal issue. Senseless collective outrage is a human condition, not an Internet content aggregator one.

I would also say that the SJW/Tumblr progressive crowd is not always wrong.  A lot of the triggers/otherkin/angry feminist stuff are, to put it simply, memes.  So people find any idiotic post, or make their own, and plaster it all over the internet.  Its not representative.

There's kind of a funny trend in content aggregators like Facebook groups, imgur, Reddit, image threads, ect. to have a large portion of the content be from Tumblr, but only actually credit it or comment on the fact that its from Tumblr when its SJW memes.

It used to be a sort of joke... but it has spawned into a full blown phenomenon.

SJW and EVERYONE ELSE I am just going to say this now... there is absolutely positively nothing wrong with cultural appropriation. That is called "multiculturalism" and "The spreading of concepts and ideas through interaction". All cultures do this, ALL OF THEM! It is unavoidable.

Though my personal rule of thumb is as long as you don't change the color of your skin and your costume is genuine... Then it is fine. A Matador costume for example.

I've been on Tumblr enough to know that it's a very varied site in terms of what's on it, and while the prevailing political opinion is probably somewhere in the "SJW" sphere most of the site's content just isn't about politics.

Keep in mind, though, that while Reddit and 4chan do oversimplify Tumblr, Tumblr and its ultraprogressive amigos do the same thing to those sites. Hell, in just the past few months there have been multiple anti-Reddit and anti-4chan media blitzes based on the actions of reprehensible individuals. It's not like Tumblr get singled out for strawmanning and cherrypicking.

As for cultural appropriation, the exact cause of the butthurt depends on the culture being "appropriated". In the US, non-black appropriation of "black culture" is a pretty complex phenomenon that genuinely deserves to be discussed, but "appropriation" of other cultures is more suspect.

From experience both online and in person, most cases of the latter involve second-generation immigrants from affluent families in their teens and twenties who experience pretty much zero oppression in America (and in fact are frequently part of ethnic/racial groups that are statistically better off than white people in most respects). Their parents (usually actually from another country) often don't mind or are even happy when white Americans are interested in their customs, while the kids are horrified because "their" culture makes them feel special.

Mind you a lot of the SJW thing is just a way to troll without getting in trouble.

Harassing people "For the greater good" is not a bannable offense AND you won't even get someone to look at you oddly.

And it is easy too because well... "Social justice" is a wide area with contradictory information.

Make a female character sexual? She is now objectified. Make a female character non-sexual? She is now purified putting unfair standard onto women. Make a female somewhere inbetween? She is both! (I am using women because it is the least controversial example... I do NOT want to do race or age examples)
