They're soc-dems, which is generally the best approach: democracy as usual with a comprehensive social safety net and progressive taxation.

Social democracy is socialism. The main thing distinguishing it is that social democracy chose to work democratically rather than through revolution. That's why it's called "democratic socialism".
The difference matters. It's kinda like the difference between an attenuated vaccine and straight up shooting someone up with Ebola. Technically, same animal. Realistically, one is more likely to wreck everything because it's too brute-force to have anything to oppose it.

Kinda the strength of democracy - you have people who'll yell at you if you try to starve a couple million citizens, be it on purpose or by incompetence.

I agree, the difference matters. But it's the difference between democratic and revolutionary ideology. Not between social democracy and socialism.

Actually democratic socialism is state-socialism, just with elections.

If you look at Marx's definition of the "socialism" stage, it's about workers controlling the means of production. Which basically means democratic control of enterprises, and equitable division of profits relative to how much labour you put in, rather than having a boss/worker dichotomy and having someone else taking most of the profits. Of course, this concept has nothing at all to do with how soviet "socialism" worked or democratic socialism.

I think a good way to understand Marx's basic idea is that by having worker-owned/controlled factories (what he refered to as socialism) you remove the dichotomy between workers and management. That leaves two parallel heirarchies: companies on one side, and government on the other. Marx's final stage "communism" actually postulates the withering away of the state aparatus. i.e. you're left with autonomous economic collectives which have democratic processes at the local level, and work together to solve disputes, basically integrating politics and economics into a single heirarchy. I think this basic idea of eliminating structural dichotomies is an important perspective to understanding the basis of such theories.

Theoretically, yes. In practice, though, you're never going to have a completely socialist state under a democratic system for the same reason that no other ideological strain will be able to establish and maintain the sort of state it desires. In practice, democratic socialism results in a more moderate state than revolutionary socialism because there are opposition parties and government won't necessarily be formed by a socialist party or coalition in every election. And that's in multiparty parliamentary systems that allow the governing party pretty substantial leeway--in a system like that of the U.S. where minority parties can still block legislation, it's functionally impossible for the majority party to get everything they want, and you've got much greater room for internal dissent alongside that.

Which is why social democracy is nice, as noted above: you generally get a lot of the good points of socialism without the fallout of a revolution or the potential to backslide into authoritarianism.

Payday 2 takes 30 minutes to apply a 158 meg patch. After I built my computer and got a 2 terabyte HDD I installed most of my games, and PD2, thinking "that's what I have all this space for right?"

Except this game "updates" daily (which I suspect is just shoveling more unpurchased DLC content into everyone's install) and it takes no less than 10 minutes for it to finish regardless of the size of the patch.

I don't get how every other game on Earth can dl and apply its patches in a standard amount of time, and yet PD2 cannot. They must have some really elaborate compression that makes it easier for them to deploy patches at the cost of it taking for fucking ever on the client's side.

Just had the wierdest deja vu moment. Was playing some downwell and thinking about random shit when all of a sudden a pattern of thoughts about the scene in the game and the look of it all felt incredibly familiar, from my failing of the jump initially down to the point of me wanting to immediately alt+tab and go to B12 to tell you guys about it because that's how I remembered it all going. It felt weird for a few more moments before finally going away because I continued the game as the rest of the level once again felt unfamiliar.

I just had a De-Ja-Vu.. Except... different?
Because I remembered having an odd precognition of a moment happening in Blood Bowl before I ever bought the game, so I bought the game because, as I said to my roomate 'I had a deja vu about something which can't possibly happen if I don't buy this game, so I'd better get it'.
Skip to now, and it's just happened, down to mine and my roomate's reactions to the thing happening.

Freaky stuff.

I think a lot of that is the memory filling itself in backwards and altering memories to fit.

It does that.
