I don't know, that data is twenty years old. I'll admit this is just my perception, but I feel that there was a significant push in the 2000s toward actual tribe names instead of general terms (I looked for newer polls but just got the Redskins controversy). And it's possible people have different opinions on what they want to be called in a poll versus what they want to be called in a conversation.

I also question referring to a survey of Native Americans as a single huge group when lumping them together as a single group is probably the most noted problem with the current names.

Update on the case of my brother in law. The same scumbags called the owner of the truck apologising and simply asking for nobody to go to the hearing or to testify anything. They realized that the owner of the truck work with the big fishes (the military, which is one order of magnitude more powerful and corrupt than the police). We all breathe in cautious optimism.

This matches what I'm aware of on the subject as well. Take, for example, one of the leading nonprofits owned and operated by Amerindians for Amerindians: the AAIA. On low levels you use tribe or Nation names. On the regional level you can group based on common languages or shared history. "Native American" was what the U.S. government started pushing as a response to the Red Power/Indian Rights Movement.
