The continued existence of pornography on physical media baffles me. Digital erotica is one of the rare cases where the new solution is objectively better than the old one in every way.
Well, I wouldn't say every way. I mean, for starters, it's way more challenging for youngsters to get hold of an older family member's porn stash.
i mean even the idea of saving porn to your computer sort of baffles me
its not hard to just, yknow, look stuff up.

(Note: Most of these apply to all forms of media, not just porn)

All the pirate *tube sites downsample the video considerably (one of the most popular has a hard 500 meg limit when single scenes in HD can hit the gigabyte mark), so unless you have a long-term paysite subscription you're at VHS quality levels at best. That's one reason. Another is bandwidth caps - if you get into heavy watching mode it's not hard to burn through your bandwidth in no time, while by saving it you can accumulate a collection over time without straining your data cap, allowing you to binge later without racking up fees. Images are a lot less of an issue, but they're also much less shared.

As for the suitability of physical media, the hoops you need to go through to get digital media from one device to another (if, for example, you want to watch a video in the living room instead of on the computer) can be a huge hassle compared to simply moving a DVD.

This doesn't even get into the fact that reliable and fast internet is often a luxury.

Honestly, the "all streaming and always online" fad is going to crash and burn fairly soon. Media size is skyrocketing much faster than bandwidth costs are coming down, and most of the highest-capped internet plans come with an extreme amount of free spying.
This sounds less a problem of bandwidth costs (although it is part of it) and more a problem of isps price gouging areas that aren't where I am through caps because they don't have any goddamn competition in the us to knock it off with that shenanigans. Or of people using mobile phone connections as a internet line, which do have caps.

Either way, frumple's got a good point.

They don't need to anymore though, there's plenty of stuff for them to look up themselves that isn't behind paywalls.

It is a matter of infrastructure - everywhere that got broadband internet first would require complete replacement of the wiring to push the quantity of bandwidth at comparable speed, and most companies simply can't afford to do so. They make upgrades, but streaming (now in up to 4K resolution via Netflix and others) skyrockets usage faster than any company can afford to expand.

4K is kinda ridiculous anyways right now, if you're using it as more than a joke about super-ultra HD.

I barely even notice a difference between 720p and 1080p, why the fuck would I need 4K?

So you can act superior to people who don't have 4k monitors.

The difference between 720 and 1080 is very small, the difference between 1080 and 4k is not. It is comparable to the difference between VHS and Blu-Ray, or PS1 and PS3.

Okay, but what about the resolution of the Mk. I Human Eyeball?

...Wait, nope.  It has much better resolution than 4K.

If your screen is the only thing your eye can see...

Actually, if I had an immersive 360o VR chamber, I'd want 4K.

...right?

EDIT: i mean i guess there's tons of accidental google search results but it doesn't have the same level of lolwut as knowing it's inherited

there's history there

if you couldn't tell i'm being entirely silly

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

i mean, what were they gonna do, ask who took it?
