The continued existence of pornography on physical media baffles me. Digital erotica is one of the rare cases where the new solution is objectively better than the old one in every way.

Yeah, its way more convenient to get your titties off the web than a magazine now that the web is available on even your mobile phone.

Well, I wouldn't say every way. I mean, for starters, it's way more challenging for youngsters to get hold of an older family member's porn stash.

More importantly, of course, there's the much higher risk of revenge porn situations. It's harder to get a magazine to print nude photos of your ex, because chances are you weren't a professional photographer doing a professional-quality shoot when you took them. So there are ethical worries for the consumer that could more safely be abstracted with the print medium.

i mean it's still better overall but i figure it's good to have some perspective and realize few things are unambiguous, cost-free improvements

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Maybe they're stockpiling porn for a post apocalyptic time in which the internet will cease to exist and roving gangs of raiders will roam the wasteland in search of porn, which will be the new currency.

it is notably harder to find a porn stash that exists only in a regularly-cleared browser history and its user's memory, yes

My plans are uncovered :v!

Honestly though, knowing humanity, I'm pretty sure that if we suffer some huge technological collapse in the near future, someone somewhere will have saved all the porn in some way, down to the most obscure amateur stuff.

(Note: Most of these apply to all forms of media, not just porn)

All the pirate *tube sites downsample the video considerably (one of the most popular has a hard 500 meg limit when single scenes in HD can hit the gigabyte mark), so unless you have a long-term paysite subscription you're at VHS quality levels at best. That's one reason. Another is bandwidth caps - if you get into heavy watching mode it's not hard to burn through your bandwidth in no time, while by saving it you can accumulate a collection over time without straining your data cap, allowing you to binge later without racking up fees. Images are a lot less of an issue, but they're also much less shared.

As for the suitability of physical media, the hoops you need to go through to get digital media from one device to another (if, for example, you want to watch a video in the living room instead of on the computer) can be a huge hassle compared to simply moving a DVD.

This doesn't even get into the fact that reliable and fast internet is often a luxury.

Honestly, the "all streaming and always online" fad is going to crash and burn fairly soon. Media size is skyrocketing much faster than bandwidth costs are coming down, and most of the highest-capped internet plans come with an extreme amount of free spying.

faster than banwidth costs are coming down in America

The rest of the internet-connected world is doing just fine without gouging customers like the guy from manhunt gouges eyes. Never played Manhunt but I'm pretty sure that's a lot.

Wireless costs are set to rise in America. They are running out of bandwidth for signal. Too many users, too much streaming, finite physical bandwidth = higher prices. So you'd see more people "topping up" with stuff on landline/wifi hotspots to play, read or view on their phones and tablets.

It's not, but it's also significantly more risky than just having stuff on your comp, in general. The online stuff often runs some pretty skeezy website code, and not in the lewd sense. Plus what's on them, y'know, changes, has the possibility of getting hacked, etc. Something on your computer is notably less likely to have any of that happen -- there's an initial risk (that's still less, from everything I've noticed) in the acquisition, but after that you're golden.

And for folks with weaker computers, a lot of the online stuff is... poorly optimized, even if you have adblock et al running. It's an issue, even discounting bandwidth et al. S'other stuff going on there, too. Plenty of reasons to have metaphorical hard copies instead of relying on streaming sites or whatev'.

Not just a porn thing, as per shonus's note. Online media in general has its problems, and all but a few streaming sites are of questionable reliability. Generally easier access, but that's about its one competitive advantage. Is gigantic one, obviously, that offsets the issues for many people, but it's still about the only one.

Just saw an advertisement for a "slimming" hoodie.  That's a thing??
Thing is, it looks really good on the mannequin.  A bit hourglass.  I'd think it was for women, but it's supposedly "male".  It's also really cheap, so...  A banner ad actually worked today.  WTF.

This actualy reminds me of one hoodie I had and that I wore during my late years of highschool. It weird because it was rather tight fitting around the body but somewhat lose on the arms and neck, and it was rather long, covering my hips as well. Turns out it somehow accentuated my butt and I started getting comments on how my butt supposedly had gained a new appeal, then I stopped wearing them because it was weird suddenly getting comments on my butt :v
