... what a lot of critters from other modern countries seem to occasionally have trouble really grokking is that, well, a fair amount of the US (and its population) is actually in kinda' shit condition -- there's more people below the poverty line in this country than a lot of other countries have people, period, and more beyond that that are one bad turn away from it. Things may be improving for the country as a whole, but there's a lot of folks on the ground that it largely isn't, and hasn't for a fairly damn long time. To them, things really are kinda' pisspoor. That section of the population just happens to also be where a lot of the (actually fairly understandable, from their perspective) kvetching comes from.

Buncha' other stuff going on, too. S'one of those ruddy multifaceted problems.

Another aspect Frumple is that the USA, because they are a credit society, has basically a large amount of fake prosperity.

A lot of the recession they had was more taking away the illusion

Though the US screwing over its poorer citizens is nothing new. Though to my knowledge it hasn't gotten too much worse for them.

In a manner of speaking... They do often send money back to relatives back home. Oftentimes while collecting welfare benefits they are not legally allowed to collect.

Eh. Aside from stuff like public education that you get simply by virtue of being in a particular location, it's pretty hard to collect welfare benefits without being a citizen or registered alien. Lots of stuff is means-tested these days, and one way or another they usually expect some kind of documentation or ID. And all evidence suggests that an influx of immigrants, illegal or not, provides a net boost to local economies. I mean, yeah, many of them send money home, but it turns out that the net result is a creation of American wealth in spite of that, and I kind of feel like "oftentimes" isn't the case?

It depends on how the illegal immigrants are being used. If they are illegal immigrants who genuinely want to live in the US then it is no different then a legal immigrant. If they are being used for cheap labor illegally, then it is bad for the economy but I'd blame the business over the immigrant (it is essentially blaming the victim).

Illegal immigrants is just a huge scapegoat mixed with racism.

Economics is an extremely complex field, much like law. Truly understanding how it works is a lifetime-education task, and even then it is a soft science with many theories and little certainty. People generally understand the first part but not the second, and thus rely on experts to tell them "this is how things work", but because they don't understand just how soft a science it is they also don't grasp that even the experts aren't necessarily right or how easily the information they're given is manipulated by the biases of the expert in question. Thus, any expert that gives them something that feels right (particularly when multiple large businesses have been caught using legal immigrants to write procedure manuals for training before getting rid of all their American workers) it is accepted in the same way that the 5-day weather forecast is.
