I mean... did you see the graphics? AND there is no map.

By the by... no map is pretty much their reason for adding it to their list.

I guess this is the WTF thread, after all.

I would agree with GoldenEye, as long as their complaint was the controls. While I could play it at the time, relearning again would be difficult after getting used to keyboard and mouse. Who did people tend to play as in multiplayer? It was because you had to aim downwards, yes?

No, the complaint was that you couldn't shoot while moving.

That's pretty valid though
Like hell am I going to try to manually draw a map for that game.  Its idea of puzzles was "secret bomb-able wall with no clues".

I mean, it'd be one thing if careful cartography could hint at where the secrets (or direction of progress) was.  Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion were designed as such - you could often figure out where the secret rooms were because they (usually) filled gaps.

This was not the case in Metroid 1 at all:
Making even a perfect map didn't really do anything for you, except help keep track of what doors you hadn't gone through - or walls you hadn't carefully bombed every inch of.  You couldn't intuit anything about the rest of the map from what you'd discovered.  There was no clue about where to go next.

Super Metroid was vastly superior.  It added barriers that "required" (ha) certain items to progress.  Superheated rooms, pools of lava, pools of lava with grapple points, speed blocks...  The player needed to keep track of all these obstacles, so they could come back.  Either in their head, or by sketching out a map.  It didn't have to be grid-perfect is all, the game took care of that - which I think detracts nothing from the game.  This was a video game, not DND or AutoCAD.

It also added superbombs and the scanner, which (well, once acquired) removed the inane tedium which was the primary "exploration" mechanic of Metroid 1.  Super Metroid solved the issues of Metroid 1 and went beyond, becoming a classic which aged well.  Though it's still too hardcore for many modern gamers, it's actually fair.  Metroid 1 was not fair, and did not age well.  I would recommend Zero Mission instead, or just Super Metroid sans prologues.

Metroid 2 was arguably even worse, mainly due to its limited platform.  Which is a shame because it had some interesting innovations.

... Also, this is why they print those stupid lists.  They're bizarrely compelling to comment on, either for or against.

Anyway, yesterday I had to literally deal with someone's shit at work. It looked like someone walked a cow into the goddamn bathroom, and smelled a million times worse. They completely missed the toilet into a neat pile... And then tracked it around the bathroom.

I clean at the local casino, and this familiar. We had a recent incident where a guy shit his pants and dealt with it by hurling his underwear into the next stall.

By the way here is their list

Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Team Fortress Classic, Metroid, Starfox, Silent Hill, Virtua Fighter, Golden Eye, Grand Theft Auto 3, and Tomb Raider.

Now of these... How many of them would get on your list of worst aged games?
Virtua fighter didn't age that well, as the main "gimmick" of the original game (using models instead of sprites) is no longer remarkable, and they didn't do that much with the opportunity that models provided - what you get is a game that could have been made with sprites just fine, but is saddled with the hideousness that is early 3D models, the same reason that FFVI aged a lot better than FFVII.

Resident Evil gets a lot of flack for the absolute control system that they used (which is strange, since it is far more precise and intuitive than relative controls), and the engine limitation show rather badly.

For not aging too well? Sure...

For being the second worst aged game of all time?

Don't get me wrong most if not all of these games have aged, and they don't get the same free pass many 2d games get for their graphics. Yet my issue isn't that none of these games qualify as aged, but rather... that a lot of these games are actually pretty fine all things considered. Only three I felt were particularly harmed by their age.

Starfox is actually one of the best aged games ever if you consider emulation. Some versions of zsnes will run it without the slowdown, which makes it amazing.

Starfox would have aged well - if Starfox 64 wasn't so much better in every way that the original looks like shit. Super Mario Kart has the same problem.

I fel for you, man. I had to clean a masterfully done impression of some guys hairy ass, in shit, off of our toilet seat, because apparently someone couldn't aim. I hear horror stories about what you found as well.
Then there's some lady who has literally been stopping by our gas pumps to throw sacks of poop into the trash cans, and we can't get a good shot of her license plates on the cameras. I feel bad for my coworker had to find that and clean it up...

People are gross... And dumb. And weird.
Geez, I can relate to that shit. Had a guy shotgun all over a stall once at an old job, he managed to get three walls.

On topic of people soiling entire toilets, we had one in my school once. Nobody knows what went on in his mind at the time, but luckily he was caught afterwards and was made to clean it up by himself. As I hear, the biggest problem with the incident wasn't how disgusting it was, but how disrespectful of the cleaning staff it was. We take janitors seriously around here.
