... no, the one in control is the one already primed for violence with a weapon out. Which is one of the major reasons resistance is one of the faster ways to get yourself killed -- in the time you've pulled a gun, aimed, and fired (and that's assuming you hit, and the hit actually stops them), they've already put holes in you or beat you into the ground.
Every time I've been mugged it's always been clear to me beforehand someone was about to mug me; questions like what time is it, or insults or violence before actually demanding anything and I've never lost anything to a mugger just for being able to spot this shit and act before I ended up losing. Murrica alone has plenty of well publicized (REALLY publicized) accounts of people, lying on their backs, with someone sitting on top of them bashing their heads into the pavement - and because they were armed, walked away. No one walks down the street with a knife out or a gun out unless they're out to murder you (one of the funniest moments ever still has to be when some bloke stabbed one of my sister's friends, realized he was not the one he was looking for, pulled his knife out and apologized - pointing him in the direction of the nearest hospital) or they're an open carry Murrican.
The time to get the weapon unholstered, up, and pointed at the right thing, is all the time a mugger needs to put you down.
Mugger needs to do all these things too, and the Mugger is also conscious of the risk they are taking. Assuming of course as well, they can even afford a gun and are not just an unemployed youth or bankrupt addict. They pick people they assume are weaker than them so when they see they are not in fact weaker, they must reevaluate.
Home invasions are roughly in the same place, with the added fun times of blue on blue incidents. Defend yourself if you feel like it's the appropriate option, but don't delude yourself into thinking it's the safer one.
When someone is in your home it is already a life or death situation as you have nowhere to run to. Don't defend yourself and leave yourself at the mercy of your attackers, home invasion in 2007 Connecticut, that home invasion ended up with a man's wife raped and strangled to death and his two daughters suffocated to death by gasoline smoke, leaving only him alive and haunted for the rest of his life. In the UK it's even worse, buglars have grown fond of waiting until homeowners are at their door before attacking. 2005 for example, the Monckton family had this done to them, and they were stabbed. When their daughter walked down the stairs she saw lots of blood everywhere, one parent dead and another barely living. Statistics don't actually tell you the cost of what defenselessness means. These kind of home invasions became the norm in Britain south of Scotland and then you see crap where
the police wouldn't even collect evidence if your house had an odd number.Point is, handing off your safety to total strangers who have just broken into your house is completely insane. It is not the safer option. When I grew up abroad there were gates behind gates, braces against rams, cages and glass to stop people climbing over and when in doubt release the hounds and bring out the guns. Why? Because someone who's trying to break into your house wants to do something bad to you. Maybe they want to steal something from you, maybe they want to steal your children, maybe they want to kill you or just rape you. Point is you don't know, they could be completely high off their nuts. So you can either act to ensure you're safe or just pray and hope for the best. The best defence is to ensure there is no fight, if assailants know trying to break into your house for whatever reason is likely to result in their death then they will not plan to break into your house. The second best defence is to actually have a defence - to be able to hold off an attacker, even a warning shot is sufficient to let them know you are armed and they should rethink their life choices.
S'not a matter of trust, it's a matter of who actually holds all the advantages in these kind of situations.
I've never in my life slept in a house that wasn't literally designed to be defensible and short of those mentally deficient American architects who make all the ground floor walls out of glass I'm 99% certain American buildings are also designed this way (in fact, I was of the impression Americans were influential in this sort of development).
And that's not the person being attacked, at all. As the numbers have pretty consistently shown, thinking the odds are improved if you fight back is how you increase the odds of becoming a statistic, and not a happy one. Folks are more than welcome to roll the stacked dice -- and they can come out ahead, of course, for all it's less likely -- but by the raw numbers of things, capitulation or escape is the path of least fatalities.
23,000 burglaries took place in Britain 2010 where the inhabitants came face to face with their buglars and violence was used or threatened 60% of the time. In the 5 years since, more and more burglaries have been taking place, and what those numbers mean is that tens of thousands of people will be left scarred physically and mentally, too scared to go outside or go back to their homes and of course, dead. This is such a bizarre mentality, utterly alien to me - I cannot comprehend people who would wish themselves defenseless and weak, in the hopes of being such an easy target that no one kills them. Mother nature kills these creatures and makes them extinct, and sadistic fuckers sure as hell love weak prey to toy around with
When you encounter people who know only strength and weakness, strength makes them respect you and weakness only makes you more attractive in all the worst ways.
