If you're concerned about muggers, learn some effective unarmed self-defence. A gun is overkill, as the goal is to get away from the mugger, not necessarily kill them. Kicking them in the nards or punching them in the gut, then running as fast as one can is much more effective and less likely to result in tragedy.

Exactly my point.

Besides, I don't get the whole 'killing someone for mugging you' thing. Most crimes aren't exactly because they're horrible people who are just doing this for kicks.

Or more likely: drug money.

Crimes of necessity are far more common.

Definitely not, but they'll definitely receive kicks if they try to mug me.

The point is, it's silly to carry a lethal weapon for self-defence. The purpose of self-defence is to minimize personal harm, not to maximize that of others.

Can't you get tazers? Or are those restricted from the general populace?

It is pretty true in a home invasion a person is very likely to immediately back off if you fire first.

Also most burglers break into unlocked homes and steal loose things that are already in sight usually around the time everyone has already left for work.

Can't you get tazers? Or are those restricted from the general populace?

They don't always work... and depending on who your attacker is it might not even work at all.

There are reasons why the police prefer to use tasers as a way to gain compliance versus using it to actually take down someone.

Well, the assumption is that the mugger has a gun or some other deadly weapon. I guess I could understand deadly force if it really looked like they were going to attack you, but anyone who's willing to kill someone else for a bit of money and maybe a phone is almost certainly mentally unstable.

The bottom line is don't shoot people. Seriously.

Might not work? How could someone resist electricity coursing through their nervous system? Or is it penetration issues?

Generally speaking the mugger doesn't actually plan on using the gun and usually if forced to they will either back off or simply batter the person.

It is an intimidation device.

Generally speaking it depends on what the person is trying to do...

The most dangerous way to be "mugged" is to be asked to leave to another location. Those usually end in fatality to the extent where I HEARD, I cannot confirm it, that you are more likely to survive running from an armed abduction then you would being abducted.

Might not work? How could someone resist electricity coursing through their nervous system? Or is it penetration issues?

Because that isn't how Tasers work. Tasers work by coursing through someone's muscular system... not their nervous system.

Spinning heel kicks are proven to be the most effective defense against a mugging. FACT.

Really, when I've been worried about mugging I'd just empty my wallet of excess cash at home. Then I have little to lose and some cash to live on while I replaced my cards.

Where I live, there are for some reason more restrictions on them than on firearms. Even for a pepperspray you have to prove you work in security. Batons and such are available, but they're only useful if you're cornered and absolutely must fight. And even then they're useless for an untrained person. Might as well learn to fight unarmed.

It is mostly because people feel a lot less restricted with Tasers and Peppersprey and will often use it as a form of "Punishment"... as well as using them as a concealed weapon (another big no no)

While no one sane is going to shoot someone in the knee because they said something nasty.

At least that is what common knowledge says and how media tends to depict Peppersprey and Tasers.

Not gonna lie, I feel like if I got mugged I'd just empty my wallet and be like "Dude whatever you need this for just ask politely next time' or some shit 'cause I am a bitch.

Neonviek: Right, sorry, but my point still stands, you should be paralysed by the electricity, you shouldn't be able to just shrug it off.

See, that seems extraordinarily weird to me.

Actually, on the note of unarmed fighting, what kinda fighting style is best against one on one fights? I mean, I'm learning Jiu-Jitsu, which is mostly Counter and Ground based fighting, but I don't know much about other styles.
