I think it's from the Philippines/Indonesia/Northern Australia. The insects round there can get pretty big as well.

Thats a brazillian amazon specimen btw. Its mostly harmless to humans unless you somehow find one and actively attempt to touch/harass it, in which case you'll get pierced by its "fur" barbs, which can make the affected part painful for several days, or get stabbed by its two inch fangs. Otherwise, you'll likely never see one.

The guy who took the pic has been exploring the amazon for over a decade, and he has only actualy found the goliath bird eating tarantula three times, even when actively searching for one.

Well, it doesn't take much for one to hide in the amazon forest floor, even for a goliath spider, since they have basically the same colour and texture and everything else. All they have to do to hide is stop moving, since they're actualy big and heavy enough that the dry leaves crumble under their legs while moving. They're also known and the only spider in the world that creates audible noises while moving.
