I just never could get into Walking Dead... no one acts like a human being.

It must take place on Mars...

I complained a while back about the amount of character death being exaggerated in a particular series (since nobody IMPORTANT ever really dies)

but then i realized

i think this is... ALWAYS a problem in series where named people die???

I mean, people recognize Ensign Ricky for what he is when he dies, but I guess enough incidental-yet-named characters being killed off overwhelms the redshirt sense?
The problem is that it's kind of hard to make an important character die, unless your genre is classic Greek tragedy. Important people in a large amount of fiction are set up in a way that their death would make them meaningless and thus not actually important. That's the expectation people have - important people don't die, thus if you die, then you're not really important. Feedback loop.

Yeah, I would NOT open any strange zips, especially if it's contrary to how your friend normally works.

He might have been a victim to a hijacking.

... so scan with antivirus?

Or maybe ask friend about it via a medium that isn't steam, hopefully bypassing any steam account hijackings.

I think the only zips you should really open without testing are ones crazy Archivist fiends send you. Like Gunner-chan.

She's gotten to the point she's considering another external purely for archiving so she can use her current as for backups.

For a moment I thought you mean opening Gunner-chan's zips.  ;)

classic Greek tragedy
A surprisingly large portion of every battle scene in the Iliad is death scenes where every single fallen soldier's name, father's name and details of death are mentioned. In battles with hundreds of combatants. And the epic was originally part of oral tradition, not written. Sung oral tradition.

Still, I agree somewhat. Killing characters is a difficult art to master. Generally, the solution is to write so that any important deaths have repercussions. Grieving widows, projects left incomplete, on-screen funerals... And these repercussions should have an effect on the actual plot. A dead character is not always out of the story.

Try opening it inside a virtual machine if you're really suspicious.

It could be a... I don't know what they're called, small compressed files that expand to like two exabyte when you extract them.

Yeah, I looked it up right after my own post, just seemed counter-intuitive to have it named after a specific format. (and I'm too lazy to edit)

Your argument is rendered null and void.
Reread my post, it seems you've skipped over the important part:

The problem is that it's kind of hard to make an important character die, unless your genre is classic Greek tragedy. That's the expectation people have - important people don't die, thus if you die, then you're not really important. Feedback loop.
In works of fiction designed around one single main character growing up, protective figures, like Kamina, or Ace from One Piece, or Obi Wan, in Star Wars, almost always die to make main hero's resolve stronger. They're an exception to the general rule, because it's their death that gives them importance.

So, what did you "render null and void", again?
