The common idea is that the body needs time to perform some metabolical processes that it somehow can't do while you're awake, or something, but there isn't any concrete proof of this. Its funny how we've gone to space and discovered atoms but never actualy figured out exactly what the hell sleep is and why we need it so badly.

We absolutely do understand why we need to sleep: because if we don't, we'll die. Or at least have a *very* bad time mentally, with hallucinations, paranoia and whatnot. Now, once we figure out what causes those, we'll pretty much figure out what sleeping *does*.
