If it's kind of true it's not a myth. Sounds like a common misunderstanding to me, rather than, y'know, complete fantasy.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Ohh you mean the whole "Hypnosis can't make you do what you don't want to do" and "No one can hypnotise you against your wishes" myths?

So you're saying they're "True but wrong somehow." Care to elaborate?

Well the whole "Hypnosis can't make you do what you don't want to do" is basically a myth created around the fact that you can't be forced to murder anyone under the influence of hypnosis.

Yet what hypnosis does is it lowers your inhibitions. So to say "Hypnosis can't make you do what you don't want to do" is a lot like saying alcohol can't make you do anything you don't want to do... and I think we all know that there are quite a few avenues that open up once you liquor someone up enough.

So the myth is kind of true, but essentially false.
Counterpoint: MKULTRA. It would be in use if it worked to any sensible degree. It's not. Therefore... [complete the logic yourself!]

To be fair, lowered inhibitions hardly equates to mind control. You'd need subjects who aren't entirely adverse to [insert unethical CIA thing here] in the first place, and then it's probably just cheaper to pay them.

You say that as if our money isn't laced with mind-control agent.

Or get them drunk. Far more consistent results!

Counterpoint: MKULTRA. It would be in use if it worked to any sensible degree. It's not. Therefore... [complete the logic yourself!]

Only works on a certain number of people initially, can take a lot of work to get it working if your not part of that group, and it ends to fade overtime... not to mention that even if you used it to extract information, people can make things up under hypnosis or even refuse things anyway.

Hypnosis' MAJOR issue is that well... It isn't viable for the majority of people. It is the major reason why I think that in spite being scientifically proven to exist... it is still considered to be a myth to a lot of people.

Indeed, and how often does the CIA just liquor people up for information?

Re: first snippet, so you don't have a consistent effect on people. Then it's not a viable method for any serious application.

Re: second - I don't see your point. If you're implying they don't - whaaaaaaaa? Otherwise - so... what's the point in using hypnosis again?

It did work in so far as getting people to do what they wanted, then it got found out and they burnt everything. Hehehe, the US government would try giving all of its citizens LSD if they knew two things for certain; it wouldn't involve everyone going nuts and essentially becoming useless, and they could get away with it. People forgot the bit where they would just drug someone, make them have sex with a kid, prostitutes male, female and whatever else the CIA could think of and then use that to blackmail them into doing what they wanted. "Operation Midnight Climax."

There are quite a few uses. Recreation, relaxation, rehabilitation, therapy, entertainment, psychological analysis...

It just isn't a mind control technique the way it is depicted as being.

Speaking of jedi mind tricks, the surname of the pilot of the plane I just disembarked from was Kenobi.

Gender, transhumanism, why asexuality is superior to a sexuality, and recreational usage of hypnotism.
What a weird discussion thread to walk in on while sleep deprieved.

Which goes entirely against the argument you've been making that it's claimed NOT to be mind control when it really is.

Sure is a good job that it doesn't work that way then. Hypnotists aren't Obi-Wan m8.

Ohh you mean the whole "Hypnosis can't make you do what you don't want to do" and "No one can hypnotise you against your wishes" myths?

Yeah they are myths that are true in a way but ultimately false.
Case in point.

I wonder if Midazolam or Rohipnol are adequate defenses in court.

He doesn't claim hypnosis works like mind control but like a drug.
You can administer drugs to the unwary and drugs can make you susceptible to being convinced to do what you wouldn't want to do.
Replace "drugs" with hypnosis in that last sentence and that is what he is claiming.

But what does hypnosis grant instead of drugs? No trace of the evidence?

What an interesting set of topics.
