We import NZ lamb and export British lamb. In both countries the native meat is more expensive.

... as long as the lamb's still selling, why would you feel bad for the native farmer? Would mean they're getting more money than they possibly would be otherwise.

Here, at least, it's due to our backwards GST laws where locally-produced stuff is taxed but imports are not.
