Looking at the Astroturf website, it seems they only do sports fields. Not lawns in the residential sector.
So it's Ugly (Paved or Concrete) or Hard Work (Lawn or Garden). Damn.

I dunno, a garden isn't that hard to maintain once you get it started.
Unless you're aiming for neatness or an organized food garden, I suppose.

Honestly a nice paving stone patio/yard can look just as nice as a grass one, and doesn't cost you tons of time and money to maintain. They're rather common around where I live because it's the middle of a desert and water is hella expensive and scarce here.

Billy goats are often free to good home and they'll keep the grass down. It's what a friend did anyway.

An alternative to grass and concrete would be a rock garden. Fine sand instead of grass, strategically placed rocks, small fountains, and maybe some potted plants and trees to make it feel alive. Problems include animals making your yard their toilet and wind moving the sand around, but with a good fence, you can have a beautiful yard that requires little work to keep enjoyable.

Too bad they're expensive and need a lot of work to set up in the beginning.

Precisely. It takes me about twice as long to unchain my lawn mower as it does to actually cut the grass, and my lawn is decent-sized by city standards.

I mean, I wouldn't mind mowing a lawn (provided I had a push-powered mower and not one requiring fuel, oil, technical know-how, etc.), in fact I would probably enjoy the exercise, but I certainly wouldn't call it a "trivial amount of effort".

Also some of us have pets, and a grass lawn is... useful. For that.

I generally find the effort worthwhile to have a lawn to walk on barefoot instead of sandy/rough/cold bricks. Which kind of seems to be how Yoink feels. :v

So anyway, today I discovered courtesy of a major radio station that a super-excited soccer commentator shouting over the sounds of a crowd and the station's pulsing backing beat sounds exactly like death metal heard through the muffling effect of my headphones. I was briefly shocked at the fact that a mainstream station was playing metal, but then I paused my music and realised what it was.
