I don't use GIMP, it's a bit too powerful for the things I generally do with images. Paint.net is more intuitive and generally works for crudely pasting images over other images.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

FYI: On my 2011 Windows gaming PC (i5+8GB RAM), GIMP 2.8 startup takes right about two minutes or more.
On my 2006 laptop, however, the record is two hours, at least. It's currently somewhere around 25 minutes – I don't know what the fuck's up with that...

Yeah your computers are fucked in some mysterious way. Since my 2009 craptop can start up GIMP in under a minute.

And also apparently I am the only person in the world who doesn't think it's UI is particularly unintuitive. There's nothing wrong with navigating a dropdown menu :/

GIMP is about as intuitive as DF if you ask me--it's confusing at first, but when you get the hang of it it's pretty nice.

"Nice" just means "after learning how to use it, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it".

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

I meant "nice" as "feels better than the alternative".

The alternative being intuitive and sensible design?

Mysteryyyyyy...

It's probably something to do with my antivirus software. I'm using Comodo/Avast, so who knows what horrors those nasty freeware frauds have injected into my computers! No, it's probably just disk fragmentation or w/e.

I've been learning mtPaint since 2007, and I'm sure-as-hell not going to consider not liking it! /sarcasm

I use Linux. I live for unintuitive design so I can laugh at the Windows data-harvest.

(which is additionally why I am forced to use GIMP)

I guess in DF's defense, once you do memorize all the menus, it's pretty fast to do some things because you don't have to track a mouse around or even look at the screen.  B-C-W bam you're placing a wall.

Except then it takes several minutes to actually place the walls because of an arbitrary length cap on each segment, and having to select every bit of stone from a list, plus the dorfen love of casks of amontillado...

But maybe GIMP is like that but better, once you memorize how to do basic things.

Here's a WTF: We're still expected to remind dorfs to make alcohol, periodically, forever, right?  Because the job manager caps at 30, has no option to refresh, and the brewing job can get deleted by various temporary issues (mostly running out of barrels, for me).  Unless that's been improved since I last played, it has been a while...  It's just weird since jobs like weaving don't have to be micromanaged that way, despite being less vital.  And since the job manager system is so close to being a good solution.  Actually I fixed this once, come to think of it, by making a recursive macro which created thousands of brew-30-drinks jobs in the job manager.  Bonus, the administrative dorf always hit legendary super quick.  And that was back in 40d though, where the dorf would gain in all three stats from gaining any XP...  It was one of the fastest ways to level dorfs, heh.

I love a lot of the post-40d features, but never did get my head around the new military system.  One of these days maybe.  It should be easier since I haven't played in a while, so I've mostly forgotten the interface expectations I learned which changed.

Actually, you can use Shift-Enter to select every piece of stone at once (assuming there's enough of that type).
