To admit none of my artist friends even touch Gimp...

Mostly because it is terrible for their use.

I think Gimp's major advantage though is that it is free.

Takes my computer ~10 seconds at most. It's not the most recent version of GIMP, nor is the pc the most up to date pc. It's at least 5 years old now. Quad core processor though.

I use GIMP for any complicated image manipulation, like cropping or removing a certain color from an image or something, but not for if I want to draw anything on the computer.

Paint.net has been more than sufficient for any image manipulation I've needed to do.

I've had the same experience, just go with this, it's free and less of a pain in the ass than GIMP.

Adobe released PS1 or something for free. They are way better than GIMP, especially since they aren't made by hipsters who decided to make the UI as hostile to the general user as possible.
