Yes and no-- I can see that point of view.  However, it isn't so much the words that cause the mess, as it is the actions based on the words that do.  Words themselves are rarely a mess worth complaining about. Even graphitti is reasonably easy to clean up.

Political shitstorms and wars? Not so much.  Words can cause war, but words also can eliminate them. That's the whole point of diplomacy.

When you completely remove words, all you have LEFT are the political shitstorms and the wars.

Why is the comma there necessary?

I don't get why addressing the person is considered an aside? "You're happy Greg" somehow means something different here O-o...

This is one of the only two conventions I disagree with in the English Language.

The first is the "put the period inside the quotation rule, even if it is the end of the sentence."

And the second might be this... I can't think of many situations where this would be important outside pedantic.

From purdue OWL page on punctuation:

Comma

Use a comma after an introductory phrase, prepositional phrase, or dependent clause.

"To get a good grade, you must complete all your assignments."
"Because Dad caught the chicken pox, we canceled our vacation".
"After the wedding, the guests attended the reception."

"hello" is an introductory phrase.

Technically, "Hello, Gregory" is not a complete sentence unless you add a bunch of implied words. Such as "Hello, how are you Gregory?"  or "Hello, Gregory; I see you.", etc.  The implied words are usually given via tonal inflection and or body language when such a statement is uttered in person.  For instance (Sarcastic intonation) "Hello, Gregory"  would imply "Hello, Yes, I know you are there Gregory. (and I would rather I did not.)"  while (happy intonation) "Hello, Gregory."  would imply "Hello, I'm glad to see you Gregory."

Ok, but I've noticed if you eliminate all the commas it does absolutely nothing to those sentences, nor does it interfere with the flow.

I tend to put commas in when I recognize a change of flow in my sentence structure.

Right.     That's dependent clause I think. You can reorder the clause and it still works.

"When I recognize a change of flow in my sentence structure, I tend to put commas in."

Etc.

I used to overuse commas, I still do to an extent (That should have been a semicolon).  I used to be a lot worse though, I was literally Tavros.
It's a hard habit to break out of because it's so like natural speech, yeah.

Use a comma to separate nonessential elements from a sentence. More specifically, when a sentence includes information that is not crucial to the message or intent of the sentence, enclose it in or separate it by commas.
