So, I was walking by the library at my college campus and there were a ton of people running around in (what I can assume is) anime cosplay. I was minding my own business when this really fat girl in green pigtails who smelled like a Dorito factory ran up to me yelling "Senpai!!" (something along the lines of that) then hit me with a full-on side-hug.

Immediately after I printed my essay, I returned to my dorm and took a two hour shower. I felt violated.

Huh. Reading up on that, the sheer amount of corporate manipulating that went into the Harlem Shake meme. Filthy Frank and a couple of other dudes made the first few videos, almost everything else after that was done by corporations looking to ride a viral wave. The original amateur videos only had a couple of thousand views when the corporate versions started being pumped out.

What had happened was a PR firm which specializes in making money off youtube had made the first corporate version, then they spread that through the channels they had access to. Meanwhile the record company and artist behind the original sound track started spreading the earlier videos on at least half a dozen twitter accounts all at once (since they got youtube royalties from every view). This then convinced the big media aggregators that there was a viral meme here, and many big media players pumped out their own versions through all the channels they had.

No, I was actually cringing. As in "to recoil in distaste" (Merriam-Webster).
More at Frank than the story one. That wasn't good, but not cringeworthy, really.

I guess I've been made cynical to that word based on the way that it's almost always used in a completely fucking vile manner on Reddit as a way to excuse bullying by saying "UH BUT IT'S JUST CRINGE DUDE"
